Adelaide City Library to get new home in 2026

The City Library, based in Rundle Mall, attracting around 220,000 visitors annually will be moving to a new vibrant destination in 2026.

Adelaide’s beloved City Library is getting a new home in early 2026, joining forces with the State Library of South Australia to create one vibrant destination for learning, creativity and community connection.

The move is expected to draw thousands of new visitors to the State Library on North Terrace, uniting the city and state’s collections in one central spot. It will also make it easier for the community to access a wider range of programs and services in one place.

The State Library of South Australia is one of the state’s most treasured cultural landmarks, welcoming more than 550,000 visitors each year. Its collections, archives and digital resources are accessed almost 12,000 times daily, preserving South Australia’s history for future generations.

The City Library, currently based in Rundle Mall, attracts around 220,000 visitors annually and offers everything from the latest reads to digital resources, games, creative programs and exhibitions. Both libraries will continue to operate as separate entities but will share the same location, giving visitors a more convenient experience.

The relocation will also coincide with a $2 million investment from the Malinauskas Government to build a new children’s space on the State Library’s ground floor, adding even more family-friendly appeal.

“This is a very exciting announcement that will see thousands of additional visitors to the State Library of South Australia each year,” said Minister for Arts Andrea Michaels.

“The State Library was recently recognised as the second most beautiful library in the world and this is a fantastic opportunity for more people to come in and experience it.”

“The Government has invested $2 million to create a dedicated children’s space in the State Library and this move will see thousands of new families come in and enjoy it.”

City of Adelaide Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said the project reflects the city’s growing cultural scene.

“The City of Adelaide is committed to encouraging bold, interesting and purposeful developments that shape Adelaide as an engaging place to live, learn and visit.”

“We’re supporting the changing needs of our community by adapting and improving our existing facilities, building a literary hub that will appeal to an even more diverse demographic of city residents, workers, students and visitors.”

Director of the State Library of South Australia Megan Berghuis said the collaboration marks a bright new chapter.

“We are excited to partner with the City Library and incorporate their signature vibrancy and activation into the library to deliver an even more enhanced and inclusive experience for our community.”

“Since the reopening of the Mortlock Wing on 3 October, we have had more than 18,000 visitors to the space, so are elated for what’s ahead and to come for the libraries in 2026 and beyond.”

The shared home is set to become a place where history, creativity and community meet, celebrating the joy of stories, knowledge and connection in the heart of Adelaide.
