While more businesses are fighting the war on waste by striving for sustainability, we all recognise how hard it can be. Our hearts are in the right place, but the struggle is to make sure our actions are there too.
That is why we have to congratulate the Adelaide Convention Centre on becoming one of the first venues in the entire world to achieve the EarthCheck Platinum Certification, alongside the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.
“To achieve this high level of certification not only speaks to their individual and enduring commitment to sustainable practices, but also highlights Australia’s sustainability leadership on the global stage,” EarthCheck CEO and Founder Stewart Moore says.
“As Australia’s leading convention centres, they have consistently demonstrated a commitment to adopt responsible environmental practices, improve operational efficiencies and inspire a number of initiatives in their communities. Both Gold Coast and Adelaide Convention Centres ‘walk the talk’ when it comes to sustainability and they continue to play a vital role in conservation and community initiatives.”
EarthCheck’s Platinum Certification recognises ten consecutive years of best practice in sustainability. The two convention centres demonstrate strong leadership and innovation, consistently performing at above best practice in several key areas of social and environmental actions.
The Adelaide Convention Centre not only purchases 97% of their produce from local supplies, but their long-standing relationships with OzHarvest and Foodbank mean that the venue has virtually eliminated organic waste to landfill via a comprehensive food redistribution program. They have also been actively fighting the war on plastic for more than half a decade, using fully biodegradable and compostable cups and lids for hot and cold beverages, with dedicated ‘bio-bins’ in place across its property to ensure their responsible disposal and keep out of landfill.
Here’s to following in their footsteps and doing our best to save our beautiful planet!
