Adelaide Council announces million-dollar plan to reignite CBD

To help reinvigorate the CBD, Adelaide Council has announced a Reignite Adelaide program to support the city’s return to being a bustling and vibrant hub.

Adelaide, it’s time to reignite the city we love so much!

After months of a surging pandemic, a constant change in restrictions and stay at home orders, it’s no wonder our city is feeling a little unloved. Now, as Adelaide continues to move towards normalcy, it’s time to support our city precinct so it can return to the bustling hub it was before.

To help reinvigorate our lively city, Adelaide City Council has announced a $1.34 million Reignite Adelaide program – designed to encourage visitation, economic recovery and growth across the city and North Adelaide.

Free parking and greater support for the retail, events, hospitality and construction sectors headline a city support package endorsed last night.

“Our city businesses have had an extremely difficult 18 months and we are exploring ways to boost their income with more customers while also lowering their costs,” says Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor. “Reignite Adelaide will attract people to the CBD with events, activities, free parking and lower fees.”

Progressively rolling out over the next few months, the Reignite program includes an array of initiatives that will not only bolster the city economy, but encourage patrons to visit the vibrant CBD. A look at the support package includes:

  • 1 month of free evening and weekend parking in council-owned UParks, with up to 9000 spaces available.
  • 2 months of fee-free personal training permits to support the sports industry, promote a healthy lifestyle and optimise use the city parklands.
  • The fast-tracking outdoor dining permits for bars, restaurants and cafes on pathways, with a $150,000 tree development program in place to create greener, safer outdoor dining spaces.
  • All permit and development applications will be free until September for temporary activations that’ll support individuals return to the city.
  • 50% discount on all building and construction permits until October 1 to aid in streamlining the industry.
  • $100,000 City Business Support Package, striving to create jobs and aid in business recovery.
  • Event fee-free city for a trial period of 12 months to encourage event organisers to create fresh, diverse works in the CBD, attracting visitors and supporting businesses alike.
  • ‘Friday Night Live’ project to support live music venues and amplify their Friday night audiences.

The Reignite initiative will deliver on the Council’s commitment to Adelaide becoming the lowest cost capital city in Australia, reactivating main streets, laneways and the strong economies with as little red tape as possible. 

Joining other state and council initiatives like FOMO Friday, the Great State Vouchers and Illuminate Adelaide, the Reignite Adelaide program will greater enhance the vibrant CBD.

Since March 2020 the City of Adelaide has provided over $11 million in assistance through new grants and incentive schemes, financial hardship relief, business advice and support programs to help city businesses.
