Adelaide farewells another venue with ‘My Lover Cindi’ closing its doors

After three years of hosting and celebrating diversity within queer communities, Pirie Street bar, My Lover Cindi has announced that it will be shutting its doors in June.

After three years of hosting and celebrating diversity within queer communities, Pirie Street bar, My Lover Cindi has announced that it will be shutting its doors in June.

With the mission of creating a safe space for minority groups who are under-represented at many venues, the closure of this community-focused venue is yet another loss for Adelaide’s hospitality sector.

Owners Kate and Rach shared their disappointment on their Facebook page:

“Folks, we are filled with mixed emotions as we let you know that My Lover Cindi is closing its doors; heartbreak at the thought of not seeing your faces every weekend, concern at the hole this leaves in accessible queer options left on Kaurna Land”

Anticipating the questions regarding the reason for their closure, they disclosed that “… maintaining the exorbitant costs of a night-time venue has been near impossible for the whole three years and finally at this point we can no longer continue. We (and you all) have done everything possible to keep this place running but we are joining an ever-growing list of venues that just cannot function with the ‘post’-covid cost of living crisis.”

The struggle faced by My Lover Cindi is one shared by far too many venues across our state, with a string of cafes, bars, restaurants, pubs and nightclubs closing due to the financial pressure incurred by the seemingly relentless increase in expenses and interest rates and decline in available staff.

Kate and Rach are eager to ensure their last few weeks are filled with joy and community, wrapping up with a ‘My Lover Cindi’s Funeral Farewell Festival’, to be held over two days, from Friday, 31 May, to Saturday, 1 June.

“Cindi’s was always more than a space, it has been what it has been because of the community (you!). We’ve crammed in something for absolutely everyone, so pick an event, grab ya mates and ya dates and and come give Cindi’s a send off that’ll go down in queer history.

“We love you all so very very much (more than you will ever know) and our lives will be forever changed by every interaction you’ve shared with us over this bar. With pride, Club Mum (Kate) and Club Dad (Rach).”
