Joyful display on a deeply personal choice

Multi award winning performer Erin Fowler returned to the Adelaide Fringe with her 2021 sell-out production of her show EGG.

The show stems from the ideas of whether or not to have children and the reminders thrust upon people that there is a deadline for massive choices in their lives. EGG leads through the imagined marriage through children dream, to the lockdown social media prompting to freeze eggs, and into a decision.

Fowler is a brilliant, expressive performer. The work is an insight and enjoyable commentary on social attitudes around fertility, presented through a mixed physical movement format. It comedically confronts the pressures placed upon a person when the seeming measure to success is based around the ability to have children.

EGG hides the seriousness and potential intensity of the topic behind humour. A comically sized egg costume punching its way through a rain poncho, sassy Siri popup voiceover advertisements, and a fun, predominantly eighties soundtrack highlight the joys layered over the performance’s themes.

The many fun moments lighten the serious edges of the topic and a personalised reflection on Fowler’s own family history grants a unique insight into the changes of family decisions of the decades. All of this leads up to a final striking scene that neatly capstones the production with a thoughtful, tender moment.

EGG is a joyful display on a deeply personal choice by a talented local performer. The show is directed by Hew Parham and runs until Sunday 20th February at this year’s Fringe Festival. However, it will be available on demand at Black Box Live from the 18th February.
