Adelaide has been named the host city for the Wheelchair Rugby World Challenge, slated to be the largest event of its kind globally. Wheelchair Rugby Australia announced the news today, introducing the event as a significant addition to the international wheelchair rugby calendar.
From 29 May to 1 June 2025, the world’s top teams, including the Australian Steelers, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Brazil, and the Netherlands, will compete in this prestigious tournament at the Netball SA Stadium, Adelaide. The competition aligns with the Wheelchair Rugby National Championship and introduces a junior division, significantly expanding the event’s scope.
The Australian Steelers, Paralympic Bronze Medallists and currently ranked second worldwide, will play host nation. This event marks their first home play since 2018. The 2025 challenge, supported by the South Australian Government, aims to attract fans to witness top-tier international competition on Australian soil.
Minister for Tourism, Zoe Bettison commented on the selection, stating, “There is no better place than South Australia to host the largest wheelchair rugby event in the world in 2025.”
Chris Nay, CEO of Wheelchair Rugby Australia, shared his views on the upcoming event. He said, “This is an ambitious undertaking but one that our community is ready for.”
The partnership with the South Australian Government is part of a three-year agreement, intending to boost both the sport’s profile and Adelaide’s status as a host city for major international sporting events. The arrangement began with the 2024 Santos Wheelchair Rugby National Championship and will continue till 2026.
The Australian Steelers are particularly excited about this opportunity. Head coach Brad Dubberley conveyed the team’s excitement saying, “This will be the first time since the 2018 World Championships where we have been able to play in a competition at home with such a strong field of international teams.”
The event will not only spotlight the elite levels of wheelchair rugby but also focus on nurturing the sport at the grassroots. The inclusion of a juniors’ division supports the sports’ commitment to developing future talent and increasing participation at all levels. The successful integration of international and domestic competitions is expected to elevate the profile of wheelchair rugby across the nation.
