Adelaide’s Torrens Gin Cruise On The Popeye Wraps Up This May

Yes, drinking gin on Adelaide’s much-loved Popeye Boat is still a thing. But not for long. Book now before Winter sets in!

The last of the amazing Autumn weather is hanging around, and with it, the last of the Popeye Prohibition Gin Cruises! But hurry, it wraps up soon!

Last year Prohibition Liquor Company joined with The Popeye to offer monthly gin masterclasses and signature Prohibition Gin cocktails while cruising the scenic River Torrens.

The idea arose as Co-founder of Prohibition, Adam Carpenter, was so impressed with the work The Popeye team had done to reinvigorate their brand.

“The Popeye is an institution in Adelaide,” Carpenter says. “I looked at the work The Popeye team has done to revitalise the experience and, as I do with many things, thought how great would it be with gin.”

“To share what we do with new audiences in such an iconic setting and format is going to be a lot of fun for everyone.” Bianca Shuman, who took over the helm of The Popeye in 2017 from her parents Tony and Lidija, was immediately on board.

“There’s a great fit between us,” Shuman, a self-confessed gin fan, says. “Both Prohibition Liquor and The Popeye are South Australian treasures, so it makes sense to pair them together and create something to take us back to the Prohibition era when Popeye first begun.”

Last July, the first Prohibition Gin Cruise ran, with the short gin-filled jaunt booking out months in advance. Now the last of the Autumn cruises have been announced, on a scattering of Saturdays, on April 27th, May 11th, 18th and finally May 25th.

The Popeye is available for private bookings for either public or company, as well as its regular day trade, seating up to 49 people.

“For a modest hire fee, we can customise a gin or drinks experience with catering packages and entertainment to give clients a uniquely South Australian experience on The Popeye.”
