Move over Sydney and Melbourne, Adelaide has officially claimed a very unexpected crown.
According to new survey data from Time Out Australia, Adelaide has been named Australia’s sexiest city, beating out every other capital in the country for romance, flirting and date-night culture.
The survey, which polled more than 1,300 Australians, explored everything from how often people flirt and go on dates to how likely they are to have a romantic night out. And it turns out Adelaide locals are thriving.
Adelaide scored an impressive 4.83 out of five overall, with respondents revealed to be the most likely in the nation to go out on dates or plan a date night. We also ranked second-highest for flirting and romantic encounters, giving the city a new, surprisingly spicy reputation.
Adelaide is known for moody wine bars, cosy pubs, stunning beaches and gorgeous regions, and the survey suggests the city’s slower pace and social culture may actually be part of its charm.
The results also reinforce something Adelaide locals have known for years, the city knows how to make connections well. Unlike larger cities where dating can feel rushed or transactional, Adelaide’s social scene often revolves around hospitality venues, live music, festivals and food culture, creating plenty of opportunities for people to actually spend time together.
Brisbane came in second place overall and was officially crowned the nation’s flirtiest city, with respondents most likely to enjoy nights out that might lead to romance.
Sydney and Melbourne followed closely behind, though both cities scored surprisingly low for flirting and spontaneous romantic nights out. Sydney did, however, top the rankings for spotting attractive people, with Melbourne close behind. Perth rounded out the top five.
For local Adelaide businesses, the new title is another reminder of how much the city’s lifestyle offering has evolved over the years. We’re seeing more and more small bars, boutique hotels, rooftop venues and late-night dining that has transformed the city into a place that’s social, walkable and definetley experience-driven.
While the survey might be a bit tongue-in-cheek, there’s probably some truth behind it too. Whether it’s first dates over a bottle of wine, beach walks at sunset or a spontaneous weekend away, Adelaide has quietly become a city built for romance, even if locals don’t always admit it.
