Hills Cider Company has been named Best in Show at the 2024 Australian Cider Awards for its Pear Cider.
The Pear Cider is a fruity cider made using 100% fresh, real, Australian-grown pears. The cider received a Gold medal with 96 points in the New World Perry Medium category and won the trophy for Best Perry. It faced tough competition to take out Best in Show.
Hills Cider Company also received accolades for its apple cider in the New World Medium category.
The Australian Cider Awards were established in 2011 by CiderOz. The event was led by cider apple expert David Pickering and producers James and Gail Kendell, as a way to encourage quality improvements and educate consumers about the diversity of cider.
In 2014, the organisation of the Awards was handed over to Cider Australia, which is run by a committee of volunteers. The competition is now run in Melbourne, with the focus moving towards education, whilst improving consistency in cider shows across Australia.
At this year’s event, many South Australian producers were among the big winners. Lobo Cider’s Lobodo Apple Brandy won the trophy for Best Intensified / Distilled Cider or Perry, and the Lenswulf Cider was awarded Best Traditional Cider.
“These accolades are an incredible honour, and we’re deeply grateful for the recognition from Cider Australia and the support of our community. Making exceptional cider and spirits is at the heart of what we do, and it’s always rewarding to see our hard work resonating with others,” shared the Lobo team on social media.
Joining them in the winner’s circle were gold medallists, Lenswood Cider Company for their Apple/Ginger Cider in the Cider or Perry with Botanicals category and Barossa Cider Co. for their Squashed Pear Cider in the New World Perry Medium Sweet category.
