Adelaide Mums Unite For Mother’s May Campaign

Debora Krizak-1Inspirational London bombing survivor and first-time mum Gillian Hicks will be among the celebrity mums throwing their support behind the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation’s (WCH Foundation) Mother’s May campaign this month.

Running throughout May, the campaign aims to raise funds for the Foundation’s Kids FUNd, which facilitates pain distraction therapy for children at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The Foundation is calling on people to donate to the campaign in lieu of buying expensive Mother’s Day presents.

A major feature during the month is the Foundation’s annual Mother’s May Luncheon on Friday, 10 May at the National Wine Centre, which this year is expected to attract more than 300 guests.

Hosted by WCH Foundation ambassador Belinda Heggen, the luncheon will feature a panel of inspirational guest speakers, including Gillian Hicks, accomplished performer and author Debora Krizak and wife to His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR, Governor of South Australia, Mrs Liz Scarce.

WCH Foundation CEO, Sam Tolley said the luncheon is an opportunity to celebrate South Australian mothers and their children and give thanks to the valuable work at Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

“We’re thrilled to have secured an exciting line-up of inspirational speakers who together will share their intimate and touching stories about motherhood – the ups, the downs and everything in between,” Mr Tolley said.

“With Gillian Hicks becoming a first-time mother earlier this year and being faced with more challenging times, Debora Krizak’s journey as a mother of fraternal twin which led her to write a book about her experiences, and Liz Scarce sharing her life as a mother and grandmother, is sure to leave guests feeling inspired.”

Mr Tolley said money raised for the Kids FUNd will help the Foundation purchase arts and crafts used by play therapist to distract sick children from the daunting feelings that can come with being emitted to hospital and helps them feel a little more at home.

“Our Kids FUNd plays an important role in making the Hospital a welcoming and comfortable place for children. It provides much-needed distraction through play and recreation, which is said to lower anxiety and pain, as well as improve recovery rates,” Mr Tolley said.

The luncheon will also feature an array of great raffle prizes and auction items, including a luxurious trip to Singapore, which has been donated by the Singapore Tourism Commission.
