Adelaide Now The World’s Fifth Most Liveable City

Adelaide is now the fifth most liveable city in the world according to an updated global survey index by The Economist.

Moving up from eighth position Adelaide now shares fifth position with Calgary.

“This is a great result for Adelaide, and we’ll be vying for the top spot,” said Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood.

“Of course those of us that live here already know what a wonderful place it is to live, work and spend time,” he said.

Sydney dropped one position to seventh place, while Perth was down one place at ninth.

Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city, outperforming 140 cities, receiving the Global Liveability Survey top spot for a second year in a row with a score of 97.5 per cent.

Despite the range of ranking of Australian cities, only 1.6 percentage points separate four of the five capital cities included in the top ten.

“Major infrastructure works including the Victoria Square, Rundle Mall and Adelaide Oval redevelopments put us in a good position to vie for the top spot,” said Stephen.

“And of course projects like Splash Adelaide and outdoor dining during the summer months as well as other events, help make Adelaide a great place to be.”

The global liveability report surveys and assesses the best and worst living conditions of 140 locations around the world.

The survey is now a broad benchmarking tool used by city councils, organisations and corporate entities looking to compare one location with another, scoring cities based on political and social stability, crime rates and access to quality health care. It also looks at diversity and standard of cultural events, natural environments, education and infrastructure, including public transport.
