Adelaide Olympian Kyle Chalmers Watches As His Grandparents See Him Win Gold

Port Lincoln teen swimming sensation Kyle Chalmers speaking with Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe after his 100m freestyle gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Regardless of whether you’re a parochial South Aussie, or even a sports enthusiast, it was hard not to get swept away in the unexpected Olympic victory from Port Lincoln teen Kyle Chalmers as he took out one of nine gold medals won by Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil just over a week ago.

The junior world record holder in the 100 metre freestyle had a personal haul of three medals in his first Olympics, also adding two bronze medals to his astounding individual victory in his pet event, in the 4×100 freestyle relay and the 4×100 medley relay.

In this previously unreleased clip made by sponsors adidas, Chalmers sits down with Australian swimming legend Ian Thorpe to talk about his goals coming in, the sacrifices he made to reach Rio, what the experience has been like since his medal and just how instrumental his grandparents have been in getting him to this point. He also watches his grandparents at home watching his medal winning swim, remarking “it’s the quickest I’ve seen grandad stand up in a while!”

We’d love to meet his grandparents! Of course, Chalmers and the team will be on their way back from Brazil shortly for some well eared rest before no doubt beginning to plan for their next competitive meet. The victory was not only a moment for the country to celebrate from the Games, but heralds the beginning of what will hopefully be a wonderful career from another outstanding South Australian athlete.
