South Australians can watch the Socceroos Round 16 World Cup match live this Sunday at Adelaide Oval’s Telstra Plaza, as fans rally around the team that captured the attention of the globe this morning.
Matthew Leckie made history and became the hero of the nation in seconds, when he pulled off an outstanding goal in the second half of this morning’s match for the Socceroos to defeat Denmark 1-0.
The team will now play Argentina at 5.30am this Sunday, local time. This is only the second time the Socceroos have qualified for the second round of a World Cup – the first was in 2006.
The Malinauskas Labor Government has teamed up with Adelaide Oval to establish a family-friendly ‘live site’ to stream the Socceroos v Argentina Round 16 match on the plaza’s two big screens. The event will be free of charge.
“We can’t wait to welcome fans to Telstra Plaza to watch the Socceroos take on Argentina,” says Adelaide Oval CEO Nick Addison.
“It will be a great family-friendly environment and we’ll have coffee available for all the early risers who are keen to come together and show their support for the Socceroos.”
Premier Peter Malinauskas echoed the excitement saying “The Socceroos have captured the attention of the globe – and Australians are rightly proud of their team’s success on the world stage. We are creating a space where South Australians can get together and get around our mighty Socceroos, in a family-friendly environment.
“Small businesses – especially those in the city – have had some tough years, and we want this summer to be the best it can be.
“We are doing everything within our power, including making it easier for venues to open their doors to show the Socceroos game and waive the short-term licence fees, to translate a big weekend in the city into revenue for local businesses.”
This will also provide an opportunity for the State to get around their fellow South Australians who were named in the Socceroos squad – Thomas Deng, Craig Goodwin, Awer Mabil and Riley McGree.
The Malinauskas Labor Government has also worked with the Liquor Licencing Commissioner to ensure that venues that want to screen the match can easily apply to open for additional hours and have a one-off exemption from the late night code.
South Australia will play host to England, China, Brazil, South Korea and Morocco when the world’s largest women’s sporting event kicks off next year for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023.
The Socceroos last visited Adelaide in 2015 for a qualifying match for the 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign held at Adelaide Oval.
The Socceroos take on Argentina at 5.30am this Sunday, local time.
