Adelaide Oval is hitting environmental goals with the help of SA Water drinking fountains, which have saved over a quarter of a million single-use plastic bottles from landfill in just five years. These fountains, installed around the Oval, have made a huge impact by refilling the equivalent of 251,973 plastic bottles, amounting to a remarkable 151,184 litres of water.
Since their installation in 2019, the fountains have not only provided convenient, clean drinking water for spectators at some of SA’s top sporting events, but also helped cut down on plastic waste. They’ve even contributed to reducing CO2 emissions, with over 24,000 kilograms of CO2 saved through the prevention of plastic bottle production.
“By providing convenient places to refill reusable and sustainable water bottles, we’re empowering communities to create an enduring impact on the environment,” SA Water’s Brand and Community Connection Manager Kellie McDonald said.
“About 370 million single-use plastic water bottles end up in landfill each year in Australia, so our drinking fountains provide clear environmental benefits.”

The most popular drinking fountain has been the Northern Mound fountain, located near the iconic Oval scoreboard. It’s delivered a massive 44,945 litres of water, saving over 74,900 plastic bottles. The Western Breezeway and East Gate entry fountains also rank high in usage, contributing 43,457 and 23,923 litres respectively, saving a combined total of more than 112,000 bottles from landfill.
These fountains are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring low-lying arm bubblers that are wheelchair and child-friendly. Plus, it’s all free – fans just have to bring a reusable bottle and refill it at any of the fountains located around the Oval.
You’ll find SA Water drinking fountains at the Eastern Plaza, Victor Richardson Gates, Western Stand, Northern Deck, Southern Plaza, and Village Green South. And if you’re in South Australia, you can find other nearby fountains by using the SA Water BYOB app, available for download from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
With nearly 151,000 litres of water dispensed and over 250,000 plastic bottles kept out of landfill, these fountains are a great example of how small changes can make a big difference. Next time you’re at Adelaide Oval, remember to refill for free and contribute to a greener future!
