Adelaide Petrol Price Lowest In 16 Years

Adelaide’s average petrol price is the cheapest since John Howard was PM & Port Adelaide won the AFL Premiership.

Monday’s daily ULP price of 90.6c/l was the cheapest since 89.8c/l was recorded on 3 March 2004, RAA has reported.

Adelaide also has the cheapest petrol in the nation, being the only state capital with an average price under $1 a litre, RAA fuel expert Mark Borlace said.

“Falling demand for fuel driven by the Coronavirus crisis had seen crude oil prices drop to their lowest levels in almost two decades,’’ he said.

“These savings are being passed on at the bowser, with the average Adelaide pump price falling from 128.5c/l to 91.5c/l this month – a saving of 37c/l.

“That means the cost of filling the tank of a typical family sedan has fallen around $22 this month.’’

Adelaide’s average petrol price is significantly cheaper than Hobart (140c/l), Melbourne (131.4c/l), Brisbane (124.8c/l) and Perth (101.4c/l).

Mr Borlace said Adelaide motorists were enjoying such cheap petrol costs due to the traditional petrol price cycle being abandoned.

“Some retailers tried to spike the price to the mid 120c/l range a couple of weeks ago, but the rest of the market didn’t follow, and the pump price has continued to mirror the fall in wholesale prices,’’ he said.

“This is good news for motorists and small businesses and volunteer organisations, such as those involved in home deliveries,’’ Mr Borlace said.

“Cheaper fuel prices should also flow through to the cost of doing business, providing some consolation during the economic crisis cause by coronavirus.’’
