Adelaide has been celebrated as the world’s ninth most liveable city, according to the prestigious 2025 Global Liveability Index curated by the Economist Intelligence Unit. This significant achievement follows the city’s previous ranking of eleventh in 2024 and 30th in 2023, reflecting continuous improvements across several key areas.

The South Australian capital achieved an overall score of 95.9 out of 100, placing it ahead of renowned global cities like Vancouver, and just slightly behind Osaka and Auckland. Adelaide received a perfect score of 100 in healthcare and education. Other scores included 96.4 for infrastructure, 95 for stability, and 91.4 for culture and environment, demonstrating broad strengths across a range of critical domains.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas commented on the city’s latest achievement. “Every South Australian knows our capital city is a great place to live – so it should be no surprise that the analysts at the Economist objectively rank us as one of the best in the world,” said Malinauskas. He continued, “For any of the challenges we face as a state and a nation, the truth is, you wouldn’t choose to live anywhere else.”

Premier Malinauskas reiterated the state government’s commitment to further enhancing the city’s liveability. “As a state government, we have an ambition to continue to grow our already world-leading reputation in so many areas,” he said.

The Global Liveability Index 2025, which evaluates 173 cities worldwide, indicated that the average score for liveability is 76.1 out of 100. The index highlights ongoing issues affecting global stability, including geopolitical tensions and widespread housing crises, which continue to challenge many regions. Despite these global challenges, Adelaide’s high scores in the stability component stand out as a significant achievement.

Copenhagen has been named the world’s most liveable city in this year’s index, followed by Vienna and Zurich.
