Adelaide Roller Derby grand final is set to roll in this weekend

Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD) Grand Final for their 15th year will be contested between the Road Train Rollers and Mile Die Club.

Adelaide Roller Derby (ADRD) Grand Final for their 15th year will be contested between the Road Train Rollers and Mile Die Club.

Mile Die Club are on a run of 4 straight ADRD season championships, but will come in as underdogs against the Road Train Rollers who are yet to lose a game in 2022.

There will be action aplenty, as before the Grand Final there will be the third place play-off between the Salties and the Wild Hearses which is sure to be a tightly contested bout.

Ankle Grinder, member & skater since 2009, (Isabelle Hermes) from Adelaide Roller Derby says their 15th season has been a tough but rewarding one.

“15 years is a special milestone for the league, and this year has been characterised by loss and achievement. Our league founder, Barrelhouse Bessy, passed away early on in the season, which sent shock waves through our extended derby community.”

“Training and playing through the last few covid affected years has been tough, but we are also immensely proud at what we’ve been able to achieve in spite of this. Half way through this season, we were able to host more than 30 roller derby leagues from around the country for what is known as the biggest roller derby tournament in the world, the Great Southern Slam. Throughout this, our home teams have been competing against each other regularly in the lead up to the grand final of our 15th season. It’s been a big milestone season, filled with highs and lows, and we anticipate the grand final event will see two fantastic matches and an energetic end to what has been a monumental season for the league.”

As always, the Lil’ Commie Bastards will be the quick-witted MCs providing live commentary for the night, and the Bout Village will be packed with full of stalls of locally made creations. Bring a chair, blankets or cushion for your tush (limited grandstand seating available), and of course hot food and drinks will be available to purchase from the Showgrounds bar.

There will also be live music from amazingly talented local band Hey Harriett and ADRD’s own very special merch will be available for purchase.

A night with ADRD offers amazing athleticism, big hits, laughs and great entertainment from local bands and performers. Roller Derby across the world is empowering individuals, building community and creating positive change and 2022 is your chance to be part of the Roller Derby movement. ADRD are holding their annual New Member Intake Info Night on August 10th, at the Wheatsheaf Hotel. Come along to learn

all about the new member intake program and what it’s like to be a part of the community that is Adelaide Roller Derby.

If you are thinking about joining ADRD as a skater or an official (on or off skates), then the info night is for you! You don’t need any roller derby experience or skates to attend the info session, so feel free to come along and find out what roller derby and ADRD is all about!
