Looking at Christmas lights is an annual tradition for many South Aussies, and so many streets and neighbourhoods across the state truly know how to dazzle. This year, Adelaide has proven it has some of the best Christmas lights displays in the country, claiming second place on the list of Australia’s most illuminated capital cities, according to Ray White. While Melbourne may have taken the top spot, Adelaide has outshone larger cities like Sydney, Perth, and Brisbane.
So, where are the best Christmas lights across the state? Read on!
The Lights of Lobethal
For over sixty years, the Lights of Lobethal have been famous for lighting up the town at Christmas time, and the event has grown to become the largest community-run lights display in the Southern Hemisphere.
The lights display is officially in full swing, having kicked off on December 7th and running right up until Christmas. Beyond the stunning lights and Instagram-worthy driving trails, the Lights of Lobethal Festival organises a range of events, including carols in the valley, a living nativity, Christmas Markets in Centennial Hall, and a global Christmas village.
They’ve also got a range of delicious food vendors and vans dotted along the main street, and several local businesses will be open throughout the festival.
Ninth Avenue, St Peters
Head to Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, specifically St Peters, and take a drive down Ninth Avenue. Here, you’ll find one of the most spectacular light displays in the outer CBD. Each year, over 70 houses along Ninth Avenue, from Battams Road in Royston Park to Stephens Terrace in St Peters, illuminate the night sky throughout December until New Year’s Day.
For the best viewing experience, park on a nearby street and stroll along the footpath. This way, you can appreciate the intricate details and hidden surprises that you might not quite get from the car. Along the way, you’ll find food trucks, including nostalgic ice cream trucks, and fun interactive experiences.
