Adelaide’s skyline has always been a topic of contention, with limitations on building heights keeping the number of skyscrapers to a minimum in the past. All this is set to change, with a building boom underway, and a number of incredibly tall buildings set for construction, or already going up. By 2020, the ten tallest buildings in Adelaide will only include 2 current skyscrapers – with 8 massive developments on the cards. Frome Central will become the city’s tallest building at 134m and 36 floors, featuring 88 apartments and 150 hotel rooms.
Realm Adelaide, destined for Austin Street in the city, will be a close equal second, at the same height as Westpac House, coming in at 132m. It will be purely residential, with 320 apartments planned.
Here’s the top ten listing of future Adelaide buildings by height, as compiled by CTBUH.

ADDITION: The Walker Corporation’s Festival Plaza Tower will also be finished by 2020. The 27-storey office tower will involve the demolition of the existing plaza and the car park, but once completed will include up to three levels of retail development and five levels of parking. It will stand at 108m high, making it the 8th tallest building in Adelaide.
The Park Hotel is proposed for Pirie Street. The 30-storey hotel and apartment development will be built around the old State Bank building while retaining the historic facade. This development will include 280 apartments and 250 hotel rooms.
The luxury Echelon Residences building, which will be constructed by the Karidis Corporation on the old Trims site on King William Street, will house a mixture of commercial, retail and residential across two towers. Its central location will allow it to offer an incredible outlook for residents (as seen in the article featured image above). From level 20 upwards, Echelon living affords spectacular views of the city, the parklands, the hills and the sea from each of the one, two or three bedroom high-rise residences.
