The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has announced it will continue the Harry Potter Film Concert Series with a live performance of Nicholas Hooper’s score for ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’ This event is set for 17 August 2024 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, where the full movie will be screened in high-definition on a 40-foot screen.
This performance marks the sixth instalment in the series, as the ASO offers audiences the chance to experience the magic of Harry Potter with a live orchestral backdrop. Under the baton of Vanessa Scammell, the ASO will provide a live rendition of Hooper’s acclaimed score, which played a pivotal role in the film’s storytelling.
The Harry Potter Film Concert Series, created by Warner Bros. Discovery Global Themed Entertainment and CineConcerts, is recognised globally. This tour is unique in that it combines a live symphony orchestra with the cinematic experience of the Harry Potter films. Since its inception in 2016, it has attracted more than 3 million attendees and is planned to run over 2,973 performances across more than 48 countries, continuing until 2025.
Nicholas Hooper’s score for ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, highlights a pivotal time in the Harry Potter series where Lord Voldemort’s influence grows and Professor Dumbledore prepares Harry for the coming conflicts. The score, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2010, reached number twenty-nine on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the highest-charting soundtrack among all six films at that time. Music critics from Variety have described it as “emotionally churning.”
ASO Chief Executive Officer Colin Cornish commented on the event, “We’re delighted that Adelaide and the ASO are presenting the next installment of the Harry Potter Series. Nicholas Hooper’s scores hold a very special place in the hearts and minds of many and have etched themselves among the most distinctive and distinguished in film music history. To watch the film with a live symphonic accompaniment from our 75 brilliant musicians is a truly unforgettable experience.”
Justin Freer, President of CineConcerts and Producer/Conductor of the Harry Potter Film Concert Series, shared his views on the ongoing success of the concerts, “The Harry Potter film series is a once-in-a-lifetime cultural phenomenon that continues to delight millions of fans around the world. It is with great pleasure that we bring fans for the first time ever an opportunity to experience the award-winning music scores played live by a symphony orchestra, all while the beloved film is simultaneously projected onto the big screen.”
