Adelaide team launches crowdfunding campaign for one-of-a-kind Rock Camp

Girls Rock! Adelaide have kicked off a June-July campaign through Australian Cultural Fund to support their upcoming ‘Rock Camp’—a week-long music mentoring program for underrepresented youth.

The campaign aims to raise $6000 to cover the costs associated with running the flagship event in 2022.

The team of dedicated musicians, educators, academics and creatives have spent the last year and a half dreaming up a fresh and exciting experience for their community. Now, they’re reaching out for contributions to make sure they can deliver as planned.

Proceeds from the crowdfunding campaign will go toward putting on the camp, increasing accessibility for attendees, and paying skilled contributors.

“We’re crowdfunding to cover payment for venue hire, catering, expertise, equipment and materials,” says co-director Sianne van Abkoude, “but we also need support to extend our Wellbeing Team and provide scholarships for young people who can’t afford to attend otherwise.”

“We work hard each year to make sure no one is excluded from the experience because of financial barriers. So hopefully we’ll get lots of donors choosing to ‘Sponsor a Camper’ through this campaign.”

Girls Rock Adelaide is an entirely volunteer-run, and community-funded organisation—something easily forgotten given how much the team does with their limited resources.

Between hosting workshops and jam sessions, collaborating with major festivals, curating stages at events, winning national music awards, and providing hundreds of opportunities to artists and musicians, it’s amazing they have time to run their flagship program at all.

“What can’t we do? Make money appear out of thin air, unfortunately,” laughs Sianne.

Rock Camp round three will be held in this year’s July school holidays at Goodwood Community Centre. During the week, campers will form a band, learn an instrument, participate in creative workshops, see live music, work with industry role models, and collaborate to produce an original song. They’ll also experience what it’s like to perform live to an audience by finishing the week with a bang at the highly anticipated Rock Camp showcase.

“We connect young people with similar interests, and provide them with an amazing week of upskilling, music making, and connection in a community that’s safe, supportive and non-judgemental,” says co-director Hannah Fairlamb.

“We’re really hoping we reach our target through this campaign so we can keep doing what we do.”
