Adelaide has been named as one of the host cities for the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia, where it will stage five matches during the six-week rugby festival, set to take place from October 1st to November 13th 2027.

Adelaide joins six other cities across the country to welcome the world’s top rugby teams. The 2027 tournament will feature 52 matches, showcasing 792 players from 24 teams. Some of the confirmed teams include rugby powerhouses like France, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, South Africa (the reigning champions), Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Australia, England, Argentina, and Japan.

This event is expected to bring a major economic boost, contributing an estimated $1.3 billion in direct visitor spending across Australia. With more than 250,000 international visitors anticipated, the Rugby World Cup 2027 will also create around 8,700 full-time jobs, making it a significant driver for both tourism and employment.

“This is another global coup for our state and boosts South Australia’s standing as a major events powerhouse,” Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Emily Bourke said.

“We continue to attract some of the biggest sporting events on the planet and build on the significant economic and tourism benefits that follow. It also shows the next generation what it takes to succeed at the elite level and compete on the world stage.”

Adelaide’s well-established sports infrastructure, including the iconic Adelaide Oval, will be central to the tournament’s success. The city’s reputation for offering world-class hospitality will also shine, making it a must-visit destination for rugby fans from around the globe.

With thousands of rugby fans expected to flock to Adelaide, the tournament will not only benefit large-scale venues but also provide a much-needed economic lift to the city’s hospitality sector. Plus, the upcoming British & Irish Lions match in July 2025 is expected to further showcase Adelaide’s appeal as a top-tier sporting destination.

The Rugby World Cup 2027 is not just about showcasing the world’s best players, it’s also an opportunity to grow the sport in Australia. The country has set an ambitious goal of increasing rugby participation to 200,000 by 2029, and hosting such a high-profile event is a crucial step toward achieving that.
