In November 2018 the UniBar, a much-loved relic of the Adelaide live music landscape, closed. Having hosted thousands of local and international bands, the stage lights dimmed for the last time as Alex The Astronaut closed her set. Well, after a short stint as a Fringe venue in March, some renovations, and a slight rebrand, UniBar ADL is reborn!
The venue is a couple of levels lower (now on ground floor, opening onto the beautiful Cloisters), and a bit shinier, but its still focused on live music, which is set to permeate the historic University of Adelaide campus.
With a student population of 20,000 and a location right in the heart of Adelaide, the venue is bookable space for all genres of music and performance.
The team behind the venue, Gareth Lewis, Marc Huber, Kim Littler, and Aaron Sandow, have a long history in venue and events management, with festivals like Beer & BBQ and A Day on the Cans being past successes for the group.
They’re also the licensee for the SA leg of touring festivals like Groovin’ The Moo, Soundwave and Parklife (amongst dozens of other), and are involved with pubs (King’s Head Hotel and Jack Ruby) plus have interests in breweries and more.
The bar will be slinging greatest hits from the Australian independent beer scene (think Young Henry’s jugs) and pub classic dishes (think SA parmys) alongside a roster of guest chefs, food trucks and five nights a week of diverse entertainment.
The new venue will be a 500-person capacity live space. There’s also potential for 2,000 head outdoor gigs in the directly adjacent Cloisters lawns with top-shelf AV from industry leaders Novatech on a permanent 8x6m stage.
In addition, the extended Cloisters outdoor space has been extensively remodelled into a user friendly, fully accessible amphitheatre for up to 2,000 capacity complete with a range of staging and production packages to suit the promoter or agent who want to look outside of the traditional medium sized venues in Adelaide.
Bookings and entertainment manager Aaron Sandow is pretty chuffed to throw the doors open, saying “UniBar was such a massive thread in the fabric of the Adelaide live music scene for so many years, we are stoked to present a programme of live music that is diverse, inclusive and is not constrained by genre. We welcome agents and promoters or all styles of music, from all over the country – and the world – to again call UniBar home in Adelaide”.
UniBar ADL is now open for business for breakfast, lunch and knockoffs, and is a bookable space from 7pm any night of the week. The Cloisters is bookable by negotiation.
