Adelaide is heading into a very wintry stretch, with showers building today and a wet start to the weekend before another stronger burst of weather arrives early next week. For locals, that means fog on the roads this morning, cooler days across the weekend, then a milder but much wetter lead-in to Tuesday as a low-pressure system moves through southern Australia.
Today’s weather is shaping up as cloudy with patchy morning fog and a very high chance of showers, especially later this afternoon and into the evening. Adelaide is expected to reach 19 degrees, with north to northwesterly winds shifting westerly during the day. The fog is the early hazard, particularly for commuters across the city and nearby suburbs, before the focus turns to rain later on. Tomorrow keeps the umbrella close at hand, with a top of just 17 degrees and widespread showers likely through the morning and afternoon. Westerly winds of 20 to 30 km/h will add to that classic cold-front feel, making it one of the cooler days of the coming week.
By Sunday, conditions ease a little but won’t clear completely. Adelaide is forecast to be partly cloudy with the chance of a shower or two, most likely in the morning, and a top of 17 degrees. Winds will ease during the afternoon, which should make it feel a little more settled even if it stays cool. That break looks short-lived though, because Monday brings the next notable change. Temperatures are expected to lift to 21 degrees, but it comes with a very high chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. Northerly winds will strengthen through the day, a sign that a more active system is approaching.
Tuesday looks like the wettest day of the seven-day outlook, with another run of showers, possible thunderstorms in the morning, and up to 25 mm of rainfall possible in the city. Adelaide’s top will fall back to 18 degrees as strong northwesterly winds turn westerly during the morning. The middle of next week stays unsettled rather than dramatic, with Wednesday bringing more showers and a top of 18 degrees, while Thursday remains partly cloudy with a high chance of showers and a maximum of 17 degrees. In short, Adelaide is in for several grey, damp days, with the heaviest falls most likely from Monday into Tuesday.
Across South Australia, a series of cold fronts is driving showers over the agricultural areas, western coasts and southern districts through the weekend, with the southeast, Mount Lofty Ranges and Kangaroo Island set to see the highest totals by Monday night. Rainfall across those areas could reach 15 to 30 mm, with isolated falls of 30 to 40 mm. Possible thunderstorms are also flagged for southern coastal areas today, and again about the west coast and agricultural areas on Monday.
Regional communities further north will see less rain, but conditions stay changeable as winds swing from northwesterly to westerly and southwesterly behind each front. On the water, a Strong Wind Warning is in place for parts of the South Australian coast on Saturday, while inland flood impacts continue in the state’s far north-east as elevated river levels persist around Innamincka and along the Warburton River.
Happy Friday, stay dry!
