South Australia is set to experience a heatwave this week, with temperatures forecasted to soar well above average across the state. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe heatwave warning effective from Sunday, 9 February to Wednesday, 12 February for regions including Kangaroo Island, West Coast, Lower Eyre Peninsula, and North West Pastoral Districts.
In Adelaide today, you can expect sunny skies with a maximum temperature of 34. Winds are expected to blow from the east to southeasterly at speeds of 15 to 25 km/h. Moving into Tuesday, conditions remain dry and sunny with temperatures forecasted to increase further, reaching a high of 37 degrees. Winds will shift slightly, starting easterly and turning to northeasterly in the morning, before easing back to east to southeasterly in the afternoon.
The weather will continue to heat up on Wednesday, reaching a searing 42 degrees. While it will still be mostly sunny, there is a slight 10 percent chance of rain. Winds will be easterly early, turning to northeasterly at increased speeds of 20 to 30 km/h during the morning.
In addition to the heat, the state is also facing wind warnings. A strong wind warning is in effect for the South Central Coast and Lower South East Coast for Monday. However, previous warnings for the Central Coast, Investigator Strait, and Upper South East Coast have been cancelled.
The weather situation across South Australia involves a stationary low pressure trough over the far northeast, while a high pressure system south of the state moves towards Tasmania, influencing weather patterns with its extended ridging until Tuesday morning. A low pressure trough developing near the western border is expected to be pushed eastward by a frontal system on Wednesday, exiting the area by Thursday.
Besides the soaring temperatures, Tuesday might bring showers to the far west while remaining dry elsewhere. Winds will also pick up, becoming fresh and gusty northeasterlies by evening. On Wednesday, as a cool change approaches, there is potential for showers and thunderstorms in the northwest. While the temperatures in most parts of the state will remain significantly high, they are expected to drop closer to average in the far west following the cool change. This will bring about rapid shifts in wind directions, turning to gusty southwesterlies post-change.
