Adelaide residents are facing a heatwave this weekend with temperatures forecasted to soar well above the average. According to the Bureau of Meteorology’s latest update, parts of South Australia are under a severe heatwave warning from Friday, 31 January to Monday, 3 February 2025.
The warning affects multiple regions including the Upper South East, Lower South East, Riverland, Murraylands, Mid North, Lower Eyre Peninsula, North West Pastoral, and Mount Lofty Ranges Districts.
For the remainder of Saturday, Adelaide will experience mostly sunny conditions with a morning smoke haze due to fires in western Victoria. The weather will start with easterly winds at 15 to 25 km/h, shifting to west and southwesterly in the early afternoon, and becoming south to southeasterly towards the evening at 20 to 30 km/h. Adelaide is set for a hot 36 degrees today. While there’s a slim chance of rain, thunderstorms might occur in the northeast and areas around Riverland and Murraylands during the afternoon.
The heat continues on Sunday, 2 February, with a forecast of sunny skies and a minimum temperature of 22°C, escalating to a top of 38°C. The Adelaide area will experience similar wind conditions as Saturday. There’s also the chance of a thunderstorm in the northern suburbs during the morning and afternoon which might provide a slight respite from the heat.
On Monday, 3 February, Adelaide will witness another sunny and very hot day with temperatures reaching up to 39°C. The morning will start sunny, but there is a possibility of afternoon thunderstorms particularly around the northern suburbs. Winds will shift from east to northeasterly at 20 to 30 km/h in the morning to west to northwesterly at 15 to 20 km/h and then to light winds in the evening.
The broader weather situation involves a high pressure system to the south of South Australia moving eastwards to be centred over the Tasman Sea. This system will continue to maintain a ridge to the south. Over the weekend and into early next week, a low pressure trough from the eastern states will extend over eastern South Australia. Another trough is expected to develop near the Western Australia border on Monday and move eastwards.
