Adelaide weather forecast for Saturday May 23 and the days ahead

Adelaide is heading into a cool, unsettled week, with Sunday shaping as the wettest day before showers linger into the days ahead. Here’s what to expect across the week.

Adelaide is set for a cool, grey and at times wet stretch over the next week, with showers increasing through Sunday before a run of mostly 19-degree days.

The change is being driven by a cold front moving into South Australia from the west, followed by a low pressure system expected to track across the state’s southeast on Monday. For Adelaide, that means today starts cloudy with a medium chance of showers and a top of 20 degrees, after light winds in the middle of the day shift back to the northeast by evening.

Sunday looks to be the wettest day of the week for the city, with a very high chance of showers, most likely through the morning and afternoon. Adelaide’s temperature is expected to range from 13 to 19 degrees, with between 3 and 10mm of rain possible. While winds stay fairly modest, the combination of cloud, damp conditions and cooler air will make it feel brisk across the suburbs.

By Monday, showers ease back a little, though there’s still a medium chance of a shower or two under partly cloudy skies. Adelaide is forecast to dip to 10 degrees overnight before reaching 19 degrees during the day, with light winds helping keep conditions relatively calm. Tuesday follows a similar pattern, with another possible shower or two, a top of 19 degrees and southerly winds developing during the day before easing again in the afternoon.

Wednesday is expected to stay partly cloudy with a high chance of showers and another maximum of 19 degrees. Thursday looks slightly drier, with a medium chance of showers and light winds becoming northwest to southwesterly during the morning. Friday then rounds out the seven-day outlook on another unsettled note, with a high chance of showers returning and winds strengthening from the north to northwesterly before tending west to northwesterly. Across the full week, Adelaide’s daytime temperatures remain steady, hovering around 19 to 20 degrees.

Across regional South Australia, the same broader system will bring patchy rain and cooler-than-average conditions to large parts of the state through to at least Tuesday. Isolated showers in the west today are expected to extend more broadly on Sunday, becoming more widespread over the southern agricultural area and western coasts. There is also the chance of thunderstorms about the far west today, with further isolated thunderstorms possible on Monday over the North East Pastoral, West Coast and southern parts of the North West Pastoral district, and again over the North East Pastoral District on Tuesday. Rainfall totals are generally expected to stay modest, but western coasts and the southern agricultural area could see 5 to 15mm by the end of Tuesday, while isolated heavier falls are possible in the North West Pastoral district with thunderstorms. Coastal areas can also expect fresh winds at times as the southerly change moves through.

Flooding continues across parts of inland South Australia, with elevated river levels persisting along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and lower Cooper Creek near Innamincka. Water levels at Cullyamurra Waterhole remain around 2 metres above the Innamincka causeway and are expected to stay high throughout May as upstream floodwaters continue to flow through the region.
