Adelaide weather forecast for Sunday February 2nd and the week ahead

Adelaide faces a severe heatwave over the next few days with temperatures reaching up to 39°C.

As Adelaide moves through its current heatwave, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a detailed forecast and continued warning spanning several days. The severe Heatwave Warning remains active from Saturday 1 February 2025 to Tuesday 4 February 2025, covering various districts including Adelaide Metropolitan, Upper South East, Lower South East, Riverland, Murraylands, Mid North, North West Pastoral, and Mount Lofty Ranges.

The rest of Sunday forecasts a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius and is described as mostly sunny, with a slight chance of smoke haze in the morning due to ongoing fires in western Victoria. During the afternoon and evening, there could be an isolated thunderstorm around the hills, with easterly to southeasterly winds shifting to a southerly direction in the middle of the day and again to southeasterly in the evening.

Looking ahead to Monday, the forecast maintains a high of 39 degrees with mostly sunny conditions. The chance of thunderstorms extends to the northern suburbs in the late morning and afternoon. Winds on Monday will start from the east to northeast and will shift to a westerly direction before turning back to northeast to southeast later in the day.

Tuesday is anticipated to be similarly sunny with a high of 36 degrees Celsius and light winds early on, shifting from northwest to southwest, and then changing to southerly directions in the afternoon. Although there is minimal chance of rain, a shower or thunderstorm might occur, particularly about the northern agricultural area and south of the Pastoral districts.

The larger weather situation contributing to this forecast involves a high-pressure system over the Tasman Sea which extends a ridge south of South Australia. Concurrently, a low-pressure trough over the eastern states is affecting eastern parts of South Australia and may continue influencing the weather into the start of the week. Another trough is expected to develop by the Western Australia border on Monday and move eastwards by Tuesday, followed by another high extending a ridge to the south mid-next week.
