Adelaide weather forecast for Thursday April 9 and the days ahead

Showers, possible thunderstorms and cooler temperatures are set to sweep across Adelaide as a cold front moves through South Australia. Here’s what to expect day by day.

Adelaide is heading into a cooler, showery stretch, with a cold front sweeping across South Australia today before calmer autumn weather returns early next week. That means a wet and windy end to the working week, a chilly weekend, and then a welcome lift in sunshine and temperatures by Tuesday. If you’re heading to gather round, it’s probably time to break out the rain ponchos!

Today will bring the most active weather of the week across Adelaide, with a very high chance of showers and even the possibility of a thunderstorm through the morning and afternoon. Northwesterly winds will pick up before turning westerly later in the day. The city is expected to reach 22 degrees. Rainfall totals of 2 to 10mm are possible, so it’s worth keeping the umbrella close and allowing extra time on the roads.

Friday stays damp and even cooler, with cloudy skies and a high chance of showers lingering across the metro area. Temperatures will drop to a top of 19 degrees after an overnight low of 13, while westerly winds of 25 to 40km/h shift southwesterly in the evening. It will feel brisk right across the city, especially near the coast.

The cooler change continues into Saturday, with Adelaide forecast to reach only 18 degrees. Cloud cover will stick around, and while showers are expected to be lighter and more scattered, there’s still a medium chance of a shower or two, mainly in the morning. Southwesterly winds of 25 to 35km/h are predicted.

Sunday looks similar, though a little less blustery by evening. Another cloudy day is on the cards, with a medium chance of showers through the morning and afternoon and a top of 19 degrees. Winds will ease later in the day, setting up a quieter start to the new week.

By Monday, Adelaide should begin to shake off the grey skies. It’s expected to be partly cloudy with the chance of morning fog and light winds, before a mostly sunny Tuesday brings the best weather of the seven-day stretch. Tuesday is forecast to reach 22 degrees under sunny skies, and Wednesday remains pleasantly mild with a partly cloudy top of 21 degrees.

Across regional South Australia, the cold front is bringing a broader burst of unsettled weather, especially through agricultural areas and south of the pastoral districts. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to increase today, with gusty north to northwesterly winds ahead of a fresh southwesterly change. Rainfall through to Sunday is generally expected to stay between 2 and 10mm across the agricultural area, southern pastorals and the west, although isolated totals of 10 to 20mm are possible over parts of Yorke Peninsula and the Mount Lofty Ranges. Thunderstorms could also bring isolated falls of 10 to 40mm across agricultural districts.

The north will stay warmer for longer, with temperatures above average to well above average today before cooler air spreads further inland. By the weekend, much of the state is expected to feel noticeably colder, with maximum temperatures well below average on Saturday and Sunday. Conditions will gradually settle as a strong high pressure system moves into the Bight.

There are ongoing flood concerns in the state’s far north-east. Elevated river levels are continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha Waterhole and along the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka, with more rises expected in coming weeks as floodwaters move in from Queensland. Authorities are warning that many roads and access tracks are impacted by flooding, particularly at river and creek crossings.

Strong wind warnings have been issued for parts of South Australian waters on Thursday, covering the Lower West Coast, Central Coast, South Central Coast, Investigator Strait, Upper South East Coast and Lower South East Coast.

For Friday, conditions are expected to strengthen, with a gale warning issued for the Lower South East Coast. Strong wind warnings are also in place for Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, the Lower West Coast, Central Coast, South Central Coast, Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, Investigator Strait and the Upper South East Coast.

A flood warning remains in place, with elevated river levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha and elevated creek levels along the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka.
