Adelaide weather forecast for Thursday May 21 and the days ahead

Adelaide is set for a run of cool, mostly dry days before showers arrive over the weekend and linger into next week.

Adelaide is heading into a cool, mostly settled stretch before a wetter change arrives later in the weekend, with cloud building on Friday and showers becoming more likely by Sunday and early next week.

For Thursday, Adelaide can expect a fairly gentle autumn day, with partly cloudy skies, light winds and the chance of a little morning fog around parts of the metro and nearby hills. Temperatures are staying on the cooler side, reaching around 20 degrees in the city, with similar conditions at Elizabeth, Glenelg, Mount Barker and Noarlunga.

Friday follows a similar temperature pattern, with a minimum of 11 degrees and a top of 20, though skies are expected to turn cloudier as the day goes on. For Adelaide, it’s another mostly dry day before conditions begin to change.

By Saturday, the city should still escape the worst of the wet weather for most of the day. Adelaide is forecast to be partly cloudy with a slight chance of a shower, most likely later in the evening. Northeasterly winds at 15 to 20 km/h will tend northerly in the morning before becoming light. The top will edge up slightly to 21 degrees, making it one of the milder days of the week.

Sunday looks to be the turning point. Cloud will thicken and showers become more likely as the weekend front moves through. Adelaide is forecast to reach 19 degrees after an overnight low of 12, with north to northeasterly winds shifting southwesterly and then southerly during the day. If you’re making outdoor plans, this is the day to keep an eye on the timing of showers and the cooler change moving through.

The start of next week stays cool and a little unsettled. Monday brings a medium chance of showers under partly cloudy skies, with a top of 18 degrees after a chilly low of 10. South to southeasterly winds will freshen during the morning, adding a cooler feel. Tuesday remains similar, with another possible shower, a low of 9 and a top of 17. By Wednesday, Adelaide should begin to settle again, with partly cloudy conditions, only a slight chance of a shower and a top of 18 degrees.

Across regional South Australia, the broad pattern is fairly quiet at first, with morning fog patches over agricultural areas on Thursday and into parts of the east and southeast on Friday. Conditions stay mostly dry through Thursday, before isolated showers begin developing about the west on Friday. On Saturday, those showers spread into central districts during the afternoon and may reach eastern parts by evening, while western coasts are more likely to see steadier falls.

There is also the possibility of thunderstorms in the far west. By Sunday, isolated showers are expected statewide, becoming more widespread around the southern agricultural area and western coasts. Rainfall totals are generally modest, with less than 2 mm about central and eastern districts, 1 to 5 mm about southern coasts and ranges and the west, and local falls of 5 to 15 mm about western coasts.
