Adelaide is heading into a cooler, wetter stretch this week, with showers building through Wednesday before a more unsettled change arrives on Thursday and sticks around into the weekend. For locals, that means a fairly mild start today, followed by a run of grey skies, fresh winds and a noticeable drop in temperatures by Friday and Saturday.
Today will be partly cloudy, with just a slight chance of a shower early before conditions settle. Winds from the south to southwesterly will ease by evening, helping keep the city cool with a top of 22 degrees. Tomorrow looks a little wetter, with showers most likely through the morning and afternoon and a high of 23 degrees under mostly cloudy skies.
Thursday is shaping up as the most active day of the week. Adelaide is forecast to turn cloudy with a very high chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm during the morning and afternoon. Northerly winds will swing around west to northwesterly and strengthen through the day, making for a blustery finish with a top of 24 degrees. By Friday, the cooler air moves in properly, with showers likely, gusty westerly winds and a much cooler maximum of 19 degrees.
The weekend keeps that autumn pattern in place. Saturday stays cloudy, with a medium chance of a morning shower and a chilly top of 18 degrees as southwesterly winds shift southerly later. Sunday remains mostly cloudy with just a slight chance of a shower, while temperatures stay around 19 degrees. By Monday, Adelaide should start to settle again with partly cloudy skies, light winds and a top of 20 degrees, giving the city a calmer end to the seven-day outlook.
Across South Australia, the picture is more mixed. Showers are expected across the southern agricultural area today, mainly along windward coasts and ranges this morning before easing later. Further west, cloud, isolated showers and possible thunderstorms are expected over the Nullarbor Plain, with showers extending across western districts during the day and possibly reaching central and eastern parts of the northern agricultural area or areas south of the Pastoral districts by evening. The far north should stay mostly sunny and warmer.
Wednesday brings more widespread cloud, showers and isolated thunderstorms from the west across the agricultural area and the far south of the Pastoral districts. Conditions then ramp up on Thursday as showers and isolated thunderstorms become more widespread, increasing through the afternoon and evening ahead of a vigorous cold front. Temperatures are expected to climb above average to well above average before the change, especially in northern and inland areas, while western coastal districts cool off sooner after the front passes.
By Friday, showers contract back to the southern agricultural area, with some isolated falls reaching the northern agricultural area and West Coast, while fresh to strong and gusty west to southwesterly winds make for a sharp finish to the working week. Rainfall totals to the end of Friday are generally expected to stay modest, though parts of the southern agricultural area and Nullarbor Plain could see local falls of 10 to 40 mm, mostly with thunderstorms.
Happy Tuesday!
