Adelaide is set for a cool, mostly settled week, with a few showers to start and more dry, calm weather taking over before a slight chance of weekend rain returns. For most of the city, it’s a classic late-autumn run: mild days, chilly mornings, a bit of fog inland, and no major weather surprises on the way.
Today will feel a little damp and cool across Adelaide, with a high chance of showers early before conditions ease through the afternoon. The city is heading for a top of 18 degrees, with westerly winds turning southwesterly during the morning, keeping that fresh edge in the air. Around the suburbs, conditions will be much the same, with Elizabeth, Glenelg and Noarlunga all reaching 18 degrees, while Mount Barker stays cooler at 16.
Wednesday keeps the cloud around and brings another chance of showers, especially in the morning. Adelaide is forecast to dip to 12 degrees overnight before reaching 19 during the day, with southwesterly winds easing later on. By Thursday, the weather looks far more settled. A partly cloudy day is expected, along with the chance of morning fog and light winds, as the mercury drops to 9 degrees before climbing to 20.
Friday stays fairly similar, with partly cloudy skies and light winds helping keep things calm across the city. Adelaide is tipped to reach 19 degrees after a minimum of 11. The weekend then turns a little more mixed. Saturday should still be mostly comfortable, with partly cloudy skies and just a slight chance of a shower later in the day. Light winds will become northwesterly, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 19 degrees.
Sunday and Monday both carry a better chance of showers returning to the metro area. Sunday will bring partly cloudy conditions and a medium chance of showers, with winds shifting from east to northeasterly before tending southeast to southwesterly during the day. Monday follows a similar pattern, with another possible shower or two and light winds becoming south to southwesterly in the morning. Both days are expected to top out at 19 degrees, with overnight lows of around 11.
There’s also a fairly gentle outlook for Adelaide’s coastal waters over the next few days, which will be welcome news for anyone spending time near the water. Showers are likely over metropolitan waters today and tomorrow, but seas are expected to stay around or below 1 metre, with low swell and lighter conditions from Thursday before northeasterly winds return on Friday.
Across the rest of South Australia, the picture is largely quiet as a ridge of high pressure keeps most districts stable. Morning fog patches are likely about the agricultural areas and in the west through the middle of the week, while isolated showers linger across the agricultural area today and Wednesday before mostly contracting to southern coasts. Maximum temperatures are expected to stay near to below average statewide through Friday. By Friday, isolated showers are forecast to develop about the northwest as the next cold front approaches from the Bight. Rainfall totals are expected to remain light across most of the state, with less than 2 mm for many areas, although southern coasts, ranges and the far northwest could see between 2 and 5 mm.
A Flood Warning remains current for the Inland Rivers SA, with elevated river levels continuing along the Warburton River at Poothapootha and the lower Cooper Creek around Innamincka throughout May.
Along the Warburton River, levels remain elevated at Poothapootha Waterhole, with conditions expected to continue through May as upstream floodwaters move through the system.
Lower Cooper Creek is also experiencing elevated levels at Cullyamurra Waterhole. The creek level is sitting around 2.0 metres above the Innamincka causeway and is steady, with elevated river levels also expected to continue through May as upstream floodwaters arrive.
