Hitaf Rasheed, General Manager, Events South Australia said the event would start at Elder Park, with the athletes tackling a course based around the scenic Riverbank precinct.

“We’re delighted to be welcoming elite athletes from around the nation for this event,” she said.

“They will use Sunday’s race to qualify for the International Triathlon Union Duathlon World Championships in Adelaide from the 14th to the 18th of October next year.”

The World Championships will be the largest duathlon event ever held in the southern hemisphere, involving an estimated 1,500 elite and age group athletes from around the world.

Duathlon features two running legs and a cycling leg, with athletes contesting the standard 10km run, 40km bike and final 5km run, or the half distance.

Athletes taking part in Sunday’s event include Emma Carney, a two-time world triathlon champion who is making a competitive return to the sport she dominated throughout the 1990s.

Emma – who was recently inducted as one of seven inaugural members of the International Triathlon Union Hall of Fame – suffered a career-ending cardiac arrest in 2004 and was subsequently diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia.

She went on to have a defibrillator implanted in the right ventricle of her heart and has gradually resumed training.

“It’s fantastic to see Emma, a true Australian champion and an exceptionally determined athlete, back in action at this level,” said Ms Rasheed.

“We wish her and all competitors taking part this Sunday the best of luck and look forward to many returning next year for the ITU Duathlon World Championships.”

A total of $10,000 in prize money – shared equally by the top female and male competitors – is up for grabs in Sunday’s SCA Elite Oceania Duathlon Championships.

Competition begins at 7.30am and continues until 2.30pm. Visit www.adelaide2015.org.au for more information.
