Adelaide Women Offered Free Martial Arts Training For Remainder of 2018

To help combat domestic violence, and violence against women, an Unley martial arts studio is offering free martial arts lessons for any woman who would like to learn how to better defend themselves.

Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of sports clubs, gyms, and other organisations offer free memberships for both men and women, to get them on board with their programs, but when we spotted this one, we noticed how DIFFERENT it was to the others. And we had to make a song and dance about it.

The Mettle Martial Arts Academy in Unley is offering free martial arts training for women for the rest of the year.

Open to any woman over the age of 15, there’s no tricks, no gimmicks, no contracts and absolutely no obligation to continue. Just free martial arts lessons for any woman who would like to learn how to better defend themselves.

This incredibly generous offer, has stemmed from the owner, Kade Marsh, trying to do something to combat domestic violence.

He posted on Facebook today with the offer, and explains “As a father of two young girls, it saddens me that I need to have a conversation about violence against women. On average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner and one in three Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15*. These figures are sickening and as a member of society, I feel a need to do what I can to try and make a positive change.”

He goes on to say “As a man, I try to set a good example with my own behaviour – not just for the men around me, but also for my two girls – to ensure that they see how a woman deserves to be treated and in the hope that they will never allow another man to treat them any less. Now I’ll be the first to admit that I am not perfect, and I make my own fair share of mistakes, but I try to set the bar as high as possible and give every effort to raise above it.

As a martial arts instructor, I have the huge honour of helping other people discover their own potential. I get to teach them to respect themselves, and how to respect others; to be constantly aware of your environment; to anticipate untoward behaviour; to mitigate or avoid conflict; and how to protect yourself if and when you need to. I absolutely love what I do and get great pleasure from watching my own students blossom and grow with confidence. Unfortunately, very few women are actively involved in the martial arts – sure there’s a few, but it is still a massively male dominant demographic.

BUT WHAT CAN I DO?

Earlier this year, I became a corporate sponsor to Zahra’s Quest helping to raise funds for Zahra Foundation Australia who in turn help to raise money and awareness for victims of domestic violence. The boys are well on their way to reaching their $50k goal, but I think I can still do more…
