Adelaide Zoo introduces a ‘Relaxed Morning’ for those with sensory needs

On Saturday 18 June, the Adelaide Zoo will be hosting a ‘Relaxed Morning’, which will offer a reduced amount of noise for those with sensory needs.

The Adelaide Zoo is hosting a ‘Relaxed Morning’ and opening its gates early on Saturday 18 June, so those who benefit from a quiet and calmer environment can enjoy the zoo as well.

From 8:00am to 9:30am, visitors will be able to explore the zoo at their own pace with a reduced amount of human noises on the site, before opening to the general public.

Once within the zoo, ‘relax morning’ visitors are welcome to stay as long as they wish.

“This is our first Relaxed Morning at the zoo but we hope to do more in the future!” said Senior Communications Coordinator, Georgie Hetherington.

The ‘Relaxed Mornings’ is an example of Zoos SA’s intentions to increase accessibility across sites and projects.

“Both the Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park sites and many of our up-close animal experiences are physical accessibility to all visitors.

“Our upcoming Light Creatures event also includes Auslan translation on signage via QR code videos and we are working on our first Accessibility and Inclusion Action Plan in consultation with many organisations that work across communities.

“We’re looking forward to offering even more ways for people to enjoy the site in the future and the Relaxed Morning Zoo is one step in an ongoing program of accessibility and inclusion,” she said.

Zoos SA has also developed a social story to help children with autism understand what a visit to the zoo might be like – find the document here.

As the zoo already offers a lot of accessibility and inclusive options to visitors, the Adelaide Zoo was also the official launch venue on the Pavely app – a new a social planning app that provides a directory of venues from around the state with accessibility and inclusion ratings.
