Adelaide Zoo Reopens After 13-Week COVID Closure

Adelaide Zoo reopens today, and has implemented a number of COVID-related measures.

Adelaide Zoo is celebrating the opening of its gates to the public today after being closed for months due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The zoo shut its doors on March 25, the first time in its 137-year history that it has been closed for more than one day.

Zoos SA Chief Executive Elaine Bensted says she’s thrilled to be able to welcome visitors into the zoo again.

“It’s been thirteen weeks since we closed to the public, and we’re itching to let people back in,” says Elaine.

“We’ve missed everyone terribly, and we think a lot of our animals have too – keepers have been thinking of all sorts of new ways to keep them stimulated while we’ve been closed.”

To make sure visitors can enjoy the wonder of wildlife while keeping themselves and others safe, Adelaide Zoo has implemented a number of COVID-related measures.

“We’re asking all visitors to pre-purchase their tickets online prior to their arrival to Adelaide Zoo,” Elaine says.

“This will help us ensure our visitor numbers are kept within SA Government guidelines and make sure we can easily contact people in the event of a COVID-related incident on our site.

“Visitors will also notice sanitising stations, extra cleaning of our facilities and plenty of reminders about hygiene practices during their time at the zoo.”

Social distancing measures will apply throughout the zoo’s indoor and outdoor areas, with staff and volunteers monitoring numbers inside the Reptile and Nocturnal Houses and the Envirodome.

These aren’t the only changes people will see as they move around Adelaide Zoo.

“Though the past few months have been an incredibly strange time for us, some generous donations have allowed us to use this time to upgrade some of the publics’ favourite areas of the zoo,” Elaine says.

“I encourage everyone to make their way to the newly-upgraded Giraffe exhibit to see Kimya in her new home and say hello to Sea Lions Ady and Tasko who you might find relaxing on their new beach area.

“We’ve also created a fabulous picnic area where the hippo pond used to be – perfect for visitors to relax in while maintaining their distance from others.”
