The prestigious Restaurant & Catering Hostplus Awards for Excellence, organised by Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA), unveiled its 2023 winners in South Australia last month, with Westside cafe and brekky hotspot Pony & Cole taking out top honours in the breakfast category, winning Best Breakfast Restaurant in the city (Whalers Seaside Dining in Encounter Bay won best regional brekky spot!).

The awards celebrated culinary excellence and service across the state and featured a range of diverse categories, including Asian, Italian, seafood, and steakhouse specialties.

Located in the western suburb of Hindmarsh, Pony & Cole has made its mark as an institution in South Australia. It’s known for its extensive breakfast menu with favourites like Pork Belly Benny, Hawaiian French Toast, and the Big Breakfast, and lunch offering that features mouth-watering burgers, tacos, and seafood dishes.

The cafe, a brainchild of Nicolle (Cole) Hahn and her partner Julie Pieda, is situated in a 1960s industrial warehouse in Hindmarsh, and the site, which was once marred by an old Peppertree growing through the wall, has been transformed into a vibrant culinary haven by the couple.

Under the leadership of head chef Nicolle, Pony & Cole emphasises freshness, with much of the food, including sausage, barbecue sauce, hash browns, and cheddar jalapeño bread, made in-house.

Nicolle, whose roots in hospitality trace back to her parents’ hotels in regional South Australia, brings a combination of expertise and passion to the table.

Apart from serving various dishes (and cocktails!) that keep customers returning for more, Pony & Cole is committed to nurturing talent. Offering apprenticeships to aspiring chefs, a rarity in Adelaide’s cafe scene, they provide a comprehensive culinary education.

‘They get a well-rounded education. They know how to make bread, sauces, stocks, and sausages. We change the menu around to upskill the apprentices and try to give them a wide range of experiences and build their confidence’, explains Nicolle.

Suresh Manickam, CEO of R&CA, hailed South Australia as a top food destination both nationally and globally. ‘South Australia is recognised internationally for their fine food and wine, and the winners are certainly a testament to this global reputation’, he said, highlighting the significance of the awards and the global acclaim for South Australian cuisine.

This award recognises Pony & Cole’s dedication to South Australia’s foodie landscape and innovation in the breakfast genre. For the team, it’s not just about the food; it’s about the experience, the learning, and the passion that goes into every dish.

For those in Adelaide and beyond, make sure you check out Pony & Cole for your next brekky date, long lunch with the girls, or cheeky weekend cocktail (hello, Bloody Mare!!) before your work week rolls around—you won’t be disappointed.
