Adelaide’s best Winter warmer drinks to heat up your cold days

From hot buttered cinnamon rum to gin infused hot chocolate, these soothing drinks will have you ready to brave the winter weather.

As the colder weather draws in, there’s nothing better than cupping your hands around a steaming mug of tea to banish any wintery blues. But for the days when tea just won’t cut it we’ve rounded up the best winter warmer drinks around Adelaide to really heat up the heart’s cockles. 

Oceanique’s Hot Toddy – $16 and Spiced Cider – $12

Their Hot Toddy is a delicious mix of whiskey, honey, herbs & spices. Served hot, this is traditionally drunk before retiring for the night & in cold weather. Tickle in your throat? Not after a hot toddy! 

You will also be transported to the top of the Swiss alps with a warm cup of spiced cider. It’s a warm hug on a cold winter’s day.

Topiary’s Pine Needle Mulled Wine – $14

Topiary offer a contemporary dining experience, with everything sourced locally, including their warming Pine Needle Mulled Wine. Only available during Friday night dinners during winter, it’s $14 for a good sized glass, seasoned with cumquats from the Topiary courtyard.

Cosy gin den Howling Owl has developed a stellar reputation for its inventive cocktail menus and endless list of world class gins. For a warm glass of fruity goodness with a hint of autumnal spice try their Hot Apple Toddy which is a smooth blend of sloe gin, local apple juice and secret mix of Howling Owl spices. 

Not allowing vegan customers to miss out, the Howling Owl’s Coconut Vegan Hot Buttered Rum which has now gained cult status due to its popularity at the venue, is the perfect cosy cocktail to melt your winter worries away.

Tilbrook Estate’s Mulled Wine – $5

Nothing quite says Winter Warmer like a steaming mug of traditional mulled wine, and tucked away in the Adelaide Hills, visitors can enjoy a glass of Tilbrook Estate’s secret recipe blend of red wine, sugar and spices whilst overlooking the vines. The only winery in Australia to sell bottled mulled wine, the Estate invites visitors to taste a glass straight from the simmering pot on their slow combustion stove. A glass of the small-batch brewed mulled wine will set you back $5, or you can take home a bottle to enjoy for $20.

Hains & Co Hot Buttered Rum – $20

Reminiscent of an Olde English tavern, cocktail aficionados Hains & Co serve up their Hot Buttered Rum in a traditional pewter tankard, blending their House Spiced Rum, coconut butter, ice cream, brown sugar and baking spices into a comforting cocktail garnished with a twist of orange.

Fast becoming a seasonal favourite, funky Miami-inspired venue El Cheeky Flamingo have brought back their Hot Buttered Rum for the fourth year running, with the Vardon Avenue hotspot luring in chilly passers-by with wafts of cinnamon, spices and smooth butter.

Hahndorf Inn’s ‘Bear Hug’

We love Hahndorf this time of year. What better excuse do you need to plan a visit than to try out the Hahndorf Inn’s cocktail of the month, which is most definitely a winter warmer. The beverage includes their famous Barenjager honey schnapps, vanilla Galliano, cinnamon whiskey and almond milk. Served warm with a side of honey syrup, made from Buzz honey. What’s cool about this winter warmer is that is features only local ingredients, or ingredients that have been imported from Germany, which is very fitting to the Hahndorf locale.

Paxton Wines Mulled Wine – $20, and $15 refills

This Winter, Paxton Wines Mulled Wine is back on the menu. Served in a old school enamel mug, this toasty drink has orange, cinnamon, star anise and honey from their vineyards, using Paxton AAA Grenache Shiraz as the base. Enjoy their Winter sessions every weekend 11 till 4pm Saturday & Sunday, with live music every Sunday 12 till 3.

Hotel Indigo – A Warm Hug

To celebrate Frozen the Musical coming to Adelaide, Hotel Indigo has created an elevated hot chocolate that can be spiked by the bartender for an indulgent chocolatey treat to keep you warm this winter. Served with marshmallow foam and toasted marshmallows but is available only for a limited time!

Oxenberry is a family owned restaurant & cellar door in Mclaren Vale. They produce and sell their own wine and also have a restaurant open every day for breakfast and lunch. During winter they cook their mulled wine with their own Grenache, and cinnamon, cloves, star anise, spices , oranges and apples. The mulled wine is priced at $9.5 a cup.
