For the past 20 years, Adelaide’s Cabaret Fringe Festival has warmed up audiences for South Australia’s winter festival season – and 2023 is no exception.
The new-look Cab Fringe has just launched a dazzling new program for its 2023 festival, with 30+ shows to be held in CBD and metropolitan venues across Adelaide between 26 May – 4 June.
“I am beyond excited to present the 2023 Cabaret Fringe Festival – and what a fabulous lineup of artists, venues and experiences the festival has on offer,” Cab Fringe’s Chair, Mark de Raad said at the program reveal.
“I am proud of what our small team of voluntary Board members has achieved. Long may it continue to provide its enthusiastic and positive presence in our South Australia arts landscape.“
Cab Fringe is dedicated to providing an annual platform for emerging and independent talent to perform to live audiences each year. In contrast to the mainstage Adelaide Cabaret Festival (the biggest cabaret festival in the world) the Cab Fringe is an open-access festival where anyone within the cabaret art form can register to participate.
Creating a Cabaret Fringe Festival was the vision of the late Frank Ford AM, father of the Fringe and founder of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival.
Conceived in 2001 as the ‘enfante terrible’ precocious sibling of Frank’s Cabaret Festival, it was created as the non-curated open-access affordably priced experimental platform, where emerging talent could cut its teeth on courageous audiences in venues in Adelaide’s West End.
It’s since increased in popularity and size, with local Creative Producer, Arts Educator and Storyteller Simone Di Sisto joining Cab Fringe’s Producer Lauren Thiel as the Assistant Producer for 2023.
The dynamite duo is proud to reveal the festival’s most dazzling program yet, covering a variety of local cabaret talent with shows for audiences of all ages.
Explore 30+ independently-produced cabaret shows at venues spread throughout Adelaide CBD and metropolitan suburbs, including the recently redeveloped Piccadilly Cinema in North Adelaide.
The Wallis-family-owned art deco cinema is the Cab Fringe’s festival hub in 2023, hosting a hub for artists and audiences alike: CabLive.
Activating The Piccadilly’s refurbished lounge, CabLive is the perfect intimate, winter, piano bar style date night this festival. Hosted each evening by the incomparable Dolly Diamond, enjoy guest spots by cabaret artists from within the festival and the wider community.
This performer playspace is the place to be with a peek behind the curtain. No night will be the same and you’ll have to be there to see what is revealed!
Other highlights of the 2023 program include cabaret crowd favourite Choo and Peek at The Parks Theatre, the Secret Speakeasy Society at Woodville Town Hall, If I were Elton john – Trippin’ With The Rocket Man at Nineteen Ten, Medusa’s Guide to Modern Dating at The Warehouse Theatre, and Lyra La Belle’s Hotties (also at Nineteen Ten), plus so many more.
New initiatives include a clown cabaret of sorts with local icon and Frank Ford Award-winning theatre maker, Hew Parham and local theatre makers and comedians Taylor Nobes and Nona Mona at Prompt Creative Centre.
