This year’s Adelaide’s Cabaret Fringe Festival ends this weekend with a vibrant celebration of cabaret, stories, and song. The festival is animating the city with a dynamic range of performances and this is your last weekend to get amongst the action.
The festival boasts a diverse lineup of over 100 shows, featuring an array of local and international artists. The programme includes a mix of genre-defying cabaret, subversive comedy, circus, jazz, and burlesque performances. Highlight acts opening the festival include “Frankly’s Doom Box” at The Howling Owl, “An Evening with Dame Granny Smith”, and “Tash York’s Chaos Cabaret”, alongside many others.
Simone Di Sisto, the festival director, shared, “CabFringe has always been a home for brave, experimental, and exhilarating voices—many of whom wouldn’t otherwise have a stage. This year’s festival continues to celebrate that spirit; however, without new investment, it could be our final act.”
The festival, renowned for its cultural significance and consistently sold-out shows, faces a critical turning point. The multi-year funding that has sustained it so far, wrapped in 2024. The festival’s organisers have called for public support, encouraging the community to buy tickets, spread the word, or become a financial supporter.
Despite these challenges, the festival enjoys support from the City of Adelaide and the Adelaide Economic Development Agency (AEDA), among other sponsors. These partnerships have been crucial in maintaining the festival as a significant cultural event in Adelaide’s calendar.
Di Sisto urged the public to participate in securing the festival’s future. “If you’ve ever been moved, shocked, or inspired at a CabFringe show, now is the time to take action to support the festival,” she implored.
The festival’s varied programmes are spread across numerous small venues and bars, transforming the cityscape into a hub of artistic expression. As the festival continues, attendees can expect a series of powerful performances that showcase the depth and vibrancy of the cabaret scene.
This year’s Cabaret Fringe Festival not only offers an array of artistic displays but also symbolises a critical moment for the arts community in Adelaide, highlighting the need for sustained financial backing and community engagement to preserve its future.
