Adelaide’s inner city bar and restaurant scene is about to get a creative boost in the form of Kangkong and Gypsy Dragon.

Kangkong will focus on fun shared food in an exciting fast paced environment and Gypsy Dragon, sitting right beside it at 44 Waymouth Street, will be a funky outdoor area offering exciting cocktails, beers and ciders.

Graffiti art will feature prominently on the walls of Gypsy Dragon, using work created by local artists and food from Kangkong will be available to purchase and eat in Gypsy Dragon.

Working in the style of a restaurant that flows perfectly into post dinner drinks, or vice versa, that is popular on the East Coast, the duo behind the restaurant and bar Robert Parsons and Ron Kohli, say that Adelaide is ready for more permanent fixtures of this sort.

“We’ve seen a number of pop up bars in Adelaide lately, some joined to restaurants and others not, but Kangkong and Gypsy Dragon is a bar and restaurant combination that is here to stay” Robert Parsons said.

“I have seen the potential for a new venue in the city for some time,” he said. “The time is right for Waymouth Street, which is becoming an exciting place to eat and drink within the city square”.

The food at Kangkong will be South East Asian encompassing Malay, Thai and Vietnamese.

“Kangkong and Gypsy Dragon will really stand out from the rest because of the food” explained Ron Kohli, the other half of the business partners behind Kangkong and Gypsy Dragon.

“Our Chef is Matthew Miles, who for the past two years has been working at one of Adelaide’s true institutions, Gaucho’s.

“Prior to this he spent eight years travelling Australia, Asia and the Middle East. He is really passionate about combining all this knowledge with amazing South Australia produce – from what we’ve seen, he will deliver some very special and unique dishes!” said Kohli.

Dishes available will range from salads, dumplings, curries, short ribs, whole fish plus much more, including something for those who like sweet things. A full range of wines, beers and spirits to match the food will also be available.

In addition to their talented chef, both Parsons and Kohli have had significant experience in the industry, with Parsons having opened the Treasury on King William in 2002 and owning Botanic Bar in Adelaide’s West End in 2000 and 2001 after returning to South Australia from Sydney where he had worked for nine years, some of it with the Green Hotel company.

Kohli studied hospitality management at the Melbourne Institute of Tourism and Hospitality and worked among many prestigious cafes, bakeries and restaurants within Melbourne. Moving to Adelaide in 2009 to open Chocolatree in 2011, he then opened Poco Picante (Holy Guacamoly) in 2013 and boutique espresso bar Coffylosophy on Hutt Street in March 2014.

“After my experience of three successful businesses in Adelaide, it was easy to recognise that Adelaide diners are always willing and eager to try something new” Kohli said.

“Teaming up with Rob, who has great experience as a restaurant owner and operator, we are hoping to bring something great to the Adelaide people once again”

Kangkong and Gypsy Dragon are co-located at 44 Waymouth Street, and will be open Monday to Friday for lunch and drinks, and Monday to Saturday for dinner and drinks. Both venues are closed on Sundays.
