Adelaide’s Festival Theatre is set to dazzle audiences with Chicago the musical hitting the stage this weekend. The show will run for a limited four-week season, offering locals the chance to dive into the glitz and glamour of the Broadway smash-hit right here in Adelaide.
Chicago has been stealing the spotlight and packing theatres all across Australia, and it’s no wonder why. The musical has been rocking Broadway for ages, and its dazzling score is packed with unforgettable tunes like “All That Jazz” and “Razzle Dazzle.” With the genius of John Kander, Fred Ebb, and the legendary Bob Fosse behind it, “CHICAGO” has racked up six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards, and a Grammy.
Starring the legendary Anthony Warlow as the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn, the production also features the fabulous Zoë Ventoura as the mysterious Velma Kelly. Catch Lucy Maunder as Roxie Hart, the hilarious Peter Rowsthorn as Amos, and the powerhouse Asabi Goodman as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton.
Producer John Frost from Crossroads Live is thrilled about this sensational show, saying: “Our incredible cast has been greeted with standing ovations every night!”
With its gripping story of fame and fortune, jaw-dropping dance numbers, and a score that’s become iconic, Chicago is a timeless favourite. The plot twists and turns around Roxie Hart – a nightclub dancer who turns her murder trial into a media circus – tapping into the public’s obsession with celebrity scandals. Inspired by the 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, this story’s themes of sensationalism and scandal are just as relevant today.
Choreographed by the brilliant Ann Reinking in the signature style of Bob Fosse and directed by Walter Bobbie, this production features top-notch Broadway talent. With set design by John Lee Beatty, costumes by William Ivey Long, lighting by Ken Billington, and sound by Scott Lehrer, the creative team is bringing their A-game to Adelaide.
Critics and audiences are raving about the show, calling it “a thrilling, funny, wicked night out” (Stage Noise) and “razor-sharp and extremely entertaining” (Limelight).
Catch Chicago at the Adelaide Festival Theatre from August 4th to 31st. Tickets start at just $69.90, and you can book online or by phone. After its Adelaide run, the musical will head to the Canberra Theatre Centre, continuing its national tour.
