In a time of food insecurity and increasing demand for food relief, OzHarvest have opened a free supermarket in the inner-western suburbs to provide food relief and promote reduced food waste, so those in need can access nutritious food, free of charge.
Aimed at supporting low-income earners, families, and the homeless, the Hindmarsh supermarket will offer cooked meals, pantry items, and produce to South Australians suffering food insecurity. After last week’s media preview that welcomed over 100 people, the supermarket officially opened its doors on Tuesday, August 13th in response to escalating demand for food relief amidst a post-COVID cost of living crisis. Designed to mirror the success of their location in Sydney, OzHarvest plan to source surplus produce from supermarkets and food businesses to keep their own shelves stocked.
Set to operate three days per week, the supermarket’s produce will be provided by a range of South Australian donors, including major supermarkets, wholesalers, and additional speciality stores. Businesses operating in a surplus are also being encouraged to contact OzHarvest’s office and contribute to the cause. Just like other OzHarvest initiatives across Australia, customers will not be required to present any form of food voucher or concession card to access the available produce.
As well as providing relief to people in need, OzHarvest have pledged to reduce Australia’s annual food wastage by 7.6 million tonnes. Australia’s leading food rescue organisation plans to halve our nation’s waste by 2030, and believe that their commitment can be supported by endeavours like their free supermarkets.
OzHarvest’s other free supermarket in Waterloo, Sydney, which opened in August 2020, provides relief to approximately 600 people daily. Powered by volunteers, the market operates through a ‘take what you need, give if you can’ philosophy, encouraging visitors to donate surplus food and only access the market once per week, ensuring that nourishment is provided to as many people as possible.
