Adelaide, known for its rich cultural heritage and love for the arts, has recently welcomed a new addition to its vibrant music scene with the opening of Gordy Boy Records in the heart of the CBD.
Nestled in the historic Adelaide Arcade, this vinyl store pays homage to the timeless allure of records and promises to be a treasure trove for music enthusiasts.
Gordy Boy Records Store officially opened its doors in December, bringing a unique blend of nostalgia and contemporary musical to Adelaide’s Arcade. The location was chosen with precision, situated near collectibles and comic book stores, creating a hub of cultural attractions within the arcade.
For owner and music aficionado, Ed Rooney, this venture has been a lifelong dream.
“I’ve always wanted to do this, and now I’ve had the right opportunity to work with my passion. It’s not something that’s easy or something everyone gets the chance do in their lifetimes. I’ve grabbed the opportunity and run with it. It’s a change of pace, but my passion is definitely showing,” Ed says.
Adelaide Arcade, with its character and rich history dating back to 1885, provides an ideal backdrop for the record store. It seems symbolic with the rise of records – RCA Victor launched the first commercial vinyl long-playing record in 1930 and it coincides with Adelaide Arcade’s booming popularity among Adelaidians during that time.
“The character and history of this building are amazing, plus it’s not far from my favourite bars and shops,” Ed laughs.
Now, you might be wondering about the unique name – Gordy Boy Records Store. Gordy Boy is not just a random name; it’s a tribute to Gordy, his beloved little schnauzer, who has been his rock for seven years. The store’s name is a testament to the faithful companion who has shared the journey with him.
As for the records themselves, Gordy Boy Records Store boasts a diverse collection. While they have opened with a selection of 75% new records and re-issues, there’s also a smaller stand dedicated to second-hand stock, which happens to be Ed’s personal collection of remarkable records.
The store aims to expand its second-hand stock, even buying collections from other enthusiasts. With genres ranging from soundtracks to electronic beats and reggae, they cater to a wide spectrum of musical tastes.
The resurgence of vinyl records has been a notable trend in recent years, and Ed agrees.
“The resurgence has been happening for 10 to 15 years and has slowly been building up. People are appreciating the artwork behind the album and having a deeper connection to the artist, which is missing with streaming. Your connection to the artist comes alive in the physical format,” Ed says.
So, will Adelaide embrace this vinyl haven? According to Ed, Adelaide’s unique cultural charm and tight-knit community make it the perfect place for such a venture.
“Adelaide is a cute town when it comes to its culture. Staying small has helped its music culture, and we’re a bit of a community here. Everyone’s been really welcoming. In many aspects, Adelaide punches above its weight, and record stores and music are no exception.”
