A handful of Adelaide’s main streets are set to be transformed, with the City of Adelaide announcing a multi-year revitalisation program in its 2026/27 Business Plan and Budget.

The program will progressively reshape five key city and North Adelaide precincts, O’Connell Street, Gouger Street, Hutt Street, Hindley Street and Melbourne Street, in a sequenced rollout designed to balance city life with major infrastructure works.

The long-term vision is to strengthen each street’s role as a destination in its own right. “We recognise that upgrading all main streets at once would place significant pressure on traffic movement, local access and business activity,” shared the Lord Mayor.

“Instead, Council has adopted a carefully sequenced rollout of projects that minimises disruption and supports continued access to businesses and services. Importantly, it ensures the city remains accessible and operational throughout the works program.”

Rather than a simultaneous overhaul, the project will be delivered in stages across detailed design, procurement and capital works phases, starting this financial year with early works including two new wombat crossings on Melbourne Street.

Significant preparatory work has already been completed across all five streets, including early design concepts, community engagement, contractor procurement processes and ongoing efforts to secure external grant funding.

A key focus of the program is to align timing with construction industry capacity and to align funding opportunities with State and Commonwealth funding streams to reduce pressure on ratepayers and maximise investment outcomes.

The staged rollout will also be coordinated with major private developments, with Council aiming to reduce disruption while delivering more cohesive upgrades across precincts as they evolve.

Under the 2026/27 schedule, O’Connell Street will progress through detailed design and contractor procurement before capital works commence, while Gouger Street and Hutt Street will move through final design and early construction planning. Melbourne Street will see the installation of wombat crossings alongside the commencement of detailed design work, while Hindley Street will progress through early planning and grant funding pursuit stages.

Council says completion timeframes will extend across multiple years, with the full program expected to roll out through to 2030.

“Our planned main streets program is crucial for the city and North Adelaide, but no one wants the place to come to a standstill while we carry out these works, so we have made a sensible decision,” shared the Lord Mayor. “A considered and balanced approach has been taken to determining the sequencing of main street projects, ensuring each stage can deliver the strongest benefit to the community.”

The program signals a long-term reshaping of Adelaide’s main street identity, with Council aiming to enhance the experience of each precinct while maintaining the everyday rhythm of the city throughout the transformation.
