State Library makes top list of world’s most beautiful libraries for the second time

Adelaide’s Mortlock Chamber has been nominated as one of the world’s most beautiful libraries, and now your vote could help it claim the top spot.

The Mortlock Chamber has always had an undeniable allure for both locals and visitors alike. Nestled inside the State Library of South Australia, it’s a place that quietly impresses everyone who walks through its doors. And now, it’s being celebrated on a global stage.

As part of the 2025 1000 Libraries Awards, the State Library of South Australia housing the enchanting Mortlock Chamber has been nominated as one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Libraries in the World, and now it needs your vote to help secure its place.

It’s an honour typically reserved for iconic institutions overseas, yet Adelaide’s own heritage jewel is holding its own among the best. It’s the kind of recognition that usually goes to the grand institutions of Europe or North America. Places like Trinity College Dublin or the New York Public Library.

Yet here we are. Right in the heart of Adelaide.

In fact, back in 2016 the Harry Potter-esque Mortlock Chamber was also recognised among the most beautiful libraries in the world, ranking in the top five on the Huffington Post’s World’s Most Beautiful Libraries list.

Stepping into the Mortlock Chamber feels like entering another time. It’s all light, detail and atmosphere. The grand central atrium. The iron balconies. The timber-lined shelves. Every inch of the space whispers of elegance. Designed in the French Renaissance style and opened in 1884, the building was once home to the Public Library, Museum and Art Gallery. It was a vision of knowledge and beauty from the very beginning.

Even now, it continues to turn heads. At its centre hangs a clock made by the same London clockmakers behind Big Ben. It’s still hand-wound every week by State Library staff. It sits quietly, keeping time, while visitors marvel at the craftsmanship that surrounds them.

The Mortlock Chamber is a keeper of stories. It holds over 40,000 books and collections that stretch back to the very start of South Australia’s history. It welcomes researchers, tourists, students and curious minds from across the world.

Every year, nearly half a million people step inside. Many of them pause under the soaring glass ceiling and just breathe it in.

This latest nomination places the State Library of South Australia alongside the most photographed and admired libraries in the world. And rightly so. The space doesn’t just reflect Adelaide’s past. It reflects the value we place on preserving it.

Minister for Arts Andrea Michaels has called the nomination a moment of pride.

Director of the State Library Megan Berghuis says the library is one of the most loved places in South Australia. And for good reason.

“It isn’t just beautiful. It’s part of the fabric of the city,” says Megan.

“South Australians now have the chance to help this treasured space receive the global spotlight it deserves.”

The final rankings are decided by public vote, with winners announced on 21 July. Voting is open until 15 July.

The Mortlock Chamber will soon close temporarily for restoration works. From June to September, the carpets will be replaced to ensure the room’s heritage is protected for years to come.

In a world that moves fast, the State Library of South Australia invites us to slow down. It’s quiet. beautiful and truly unforgettable. And now, it might just be crowned one of the most beautiful libraries on Earth.
