Adelaide’s public transport system set to be upgraded with new ticketing payment options

After a successful trial on metro trams, ‘tap and pay’ options will soon be installed across buses and trains across Adelaide.

Adelaide’s transport system is set to get a big push into the future with the addition of ‘tap-and-pay’ ticketing options on board all forms of public transport across the metro region.

New ‘smart validator’ machines will be installed across all of Adelaide’s bus and train networks allowing commuters to pay for their fare with their credit cards or smartphones, something they can only currently do on the city’s tram network.

While no date for the rollout of the new system has been announced, the SA Government have confirmed the change following the successful trial on the tram network. The system will first be added to the O-bahn network followed by the full bus network and completed with the addition of the system to all metro trains.

The works have been a topic of discussion for some time now across both the current and former state government leaders with the first pilot on Adelaide trams beginning in the spring of 2022. The fleet of 24 trams were fitted with the new payment method as a trial before the government made the commitment to adding it to the entire public transport system which they have agreed is no small feat.

The change comes as other major cities across the country also look to upgrade their public transport system with Brisbane introducing contactless payment earlier this year while Melbourne and Sydney looking towards the removal of a physical ticket and moving towards cardless tap-on-and-off systems.
