Adelaide’s weather forecast for Friday December 6th and the weekend ahead

Adelaide and surrounding areas face a turbulent weekend with possible severe thunderstorms and strong winds, while a severe heatwave grips the northwest.

Residents in Adelaide and across South Australia should prepare for a variety of weather conditions over the coming days, ranging from possible severe thunderstorms to strong winds and a severe heatwave in the northwest pastoral districts.

On Friday, Adelaide is expected to reach a maximum temperature of 33 degrees, with the Bureau of Meteorology noting a medium chance of showers and the possibility of a severe thunderstorm. The forecast indicates a 50% chance of rain in the morning and afternoon, with up to 2mm expected. Winds are expected to shift from south to southeasterly at 15 to 20 km/h, tending easterly at 15 to 25 km/h before becoming lighter in the early afternoon.

The weather situation across South Australia is dominated by a trough extending from interior Western Australia through to the southeast of the state, projected to slow move northeastwards over the next couple of days. This trough is associated with increased humidity and above-average temperatures across the region. Friday will also see fresh southwest to southeasterly winds sweeping across most of the west and south of the state.

Some maritime regions will experience strong wind conditions, with warnings in place for the Adelaide Metropolitan Waters, Spencer Gulf, and Gulf St Vincent for Friday, and a continued warning for Spencer Gulf on Saturday.

Moving into Saturday, Adelaide’s temperatures are expected to be somewhat cooler with a maximum of 28 degrees. Showers are likely, particularly during the morning and early afternoon, accompanied by possible thunderstorms. Rainfall potential remains low, with up to 1mm possible. South to southwesterly winds are forecast to increase, blowing at 20 to 30 km/h.

The forecast for Sunday shows an improvement in weather conditions with cloud clearing and maximum temperatures rising slightly to 26 degrees after a cooler start at 13 degrees. Winds will persist, blowing southerly at 20 to 30 km/h before turning southeasterly at 15 to 25 km/h during the evening. The chance of rain significantly decreases, with only a 5% likelihood.

Despite the unsettled weather in the coastal and southern regions, the north west pastoral district is under a severe heatwave warning for Friday. The rest of the weekend in these inland areas will continue to see shower and thunderstorm activity, particularly confined to the far north and far western districts by Sunday.
