Adelaide residents can expect showers and possible thunderstorms starting late Saturday afternoon and continuing into Sunday, along with fresh and occasionally gusty winds, according to the latest forecast issued by the Bureau of Meteorology.
For Saturday, the Adelaide area will see increasing clouds throughout the day with a very high chance of showers late in the afternoon and evening. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 25 degrees, with winds from the north to northeast at speeds of 25 to 40 km/h, turning northwesterly in the evening at speeds of 20 to 30 km/h. Rainfall could vary from 1 to 10mm with a 90 percent chance of rain.
Moving into Sunday, the weather will not ease much as the showers continue, especially likely in the early morning. The day will start with a minimum of 12 degrees and rise to a cooler maximum of 18 degrees. Winds will shift from northwesterly in the morning to west to southwesterly, decreasing to 15 to 20 km/h by the evening. Rainfall is expected to be between 1 to 6mm with the same high probability of rain as Saturday.
Marine conditions are also set to be rough with the Bureau issuing a strong wind warning for the South Australian coasts. On Saturday, areas affected include the Far West Coast, Upper West Coast, Lower West Coast, Central Coast, South Central Coast, Spencer Gulf, Investigator Strait, Upper South East Coast, and Lower South East Coast. On Sunday, strong wind warnings will remain for the Central Coast, South Central Coast, Upper South East Coast, and Lower South East Coast.
The weather situation is driven by a high pressure system over the Tasman Sea that is extending a ridge over South Australia. However, a cold front will move across SA today with a ridge of high pressure expected to build across the south on Sunday, following the front. Early into next week, a high pressure system is projected to become established over the south of SA.
Apart from showers, gusty thunderstorms will move across SA from the west, reaching central and southeastern areas by Saturday evening. These conditions will bring temperatures above average, with the southeast experiencing very much above average temperatures. Ahead of a southwest to southerly change moving across from the west during the afternoon, fresh and gusty northeast to northerly winds will prevail.
Sunday will also see showers contracting to the eastern and southern parts of SA, with possible early morning thunderstorms around the North East Pastoral district. Temperatures on Sunday will range from average to below average, except in the far northeast, where it will tend to be above average.
