READ: Code Red issued for South Australia as heatwave continues, authorities issue total fire ban
South Australia will face an extreme heatwave this week, with parts of the state expected to experience temperatures close to 50 degrees. In response, authorities have activated a Code Red to support people who are homeless and at risk during these extreme conditions.
Today, temperatures in Adelaide are expected to reach 43 degrees with sunny skies and a low of 26 degrees. Winds from the northeast will blow at 25 to 35 km/h. The heat, dryness, and winds increase the risk of bushfires, leading to an Extreme Fire Danger forecast for parts of South Australia including the West Coast, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, and Mount Lofty Ranges, which has triggered Total Fire Bans for these areas.
The Country Fire Service is urging people to review their Bushfire Survival Plans and stay informed through local radio and websites. There is also a chance of raised dust in the west later in the day.
On Thursday, temperatures will drop to a more moderate 27 degrees, with a low of 21 degrees. There may be a few showers in the morning, but the afternoon should be sunny. Winds will shift to the south-west, ranging from 20 to 35 km/h.
Friday will be cooler still, with temperatures between rising from 17 degrees up to 25 degrees. There’s a 50% chance of rain, especially in the morning, and winds will continue from the southwest.
The marine forecast includes a Strong Wind Warning for Spencer Gulf, lasting until Thursday midnight, so anyone heading out on the water should be careful.
